Help me remember a baler

Back in about 1947, Dad hired a custom operator to come in and bale 20 acres of clover/timothy mix hay. The guy had a war surplus Jeep to pull the baler, and the baler was a McCormick. What I can't remember is the model number of the baler.

As I recall, it had an engine on it, with a single wheel at the front end to support the weight of the hitch and the engine. I have been thinking it was a 45 baler...was there such an animal? I also sort of think a 45 would have been a PTO baler, assuming there was a 45 at all.

The other thought is that it was a 50-T...again, was there such a baler?

Please help un-fuddle this old memory.

Stan

That would be a 50T they were as heavy as a tank, my Dad and his Cousin bought one right after the war and we used it until about 1961 or 62. They customed baled with it and ran 100,000 bales a year through it for several years. They came with either a Cub engine or a Continal engine. Ours had a Continal.

Stan: I agree with Allan. Sounds like you described a 50T, to this old farmer.

Hugh,

Thanks for the reply. You're both right...I expanded the story a little bit in my reply to Allan. At least that year I didn't drive the tractor pulling the wagon and hayloader into a bee's nest, as I had done a year or so earlier. Grandpa's BeechNut chewing tobacco made a great poultice to take the hurt out of all those stings.

Stan: Those bees and hornets nests were always great mowing with horses. My dad was mowing one day along a railway fence. The end of the cutter bar cut right through a basket ball size hornets nest. The horses took off on the run before he could get the old McCormick mower out of gear. He thought the old mower was going to fly to bits.

Hugh,

Maybe your dad's concern about the mower flying to bits was legitimate...after all, it was a McCormick...LOL!

I remember breaking a young filly to a mower, paired up with an older, well-broke mare. Fortunately the mare was sensible enough to hold the filly back a little.

Stan,

Was it one of these 50-T outfits? The 445 was PTO like you say.

Wonder if it was the same custom guy my dad hired?

Ran that joker off in a hurry. Who would ever want to put up hay in small square bales? :>)

Allan - That's REAL nice looking old 50-T baler. Dad baled hundreds of thousands of bales with one just like that except for the steerable nose wheel in a custom baling business He ran after WW-II. My Super H still had the doubled-up drawbar He welded up to resist the bending & breaking force of the plunger. Neighbor that We traded baling help with had a 55-T that was similar but larger. There was a 45-T also. The 445 was a MUCH newer baler, from the late 70's I believe.

Allan,

Yep, that's the one, alright. It was the first time we'd ever baled hay. We put 1000 bales in one bay of the haymow, whereas we'd put that much loose hay in the barn spread over three bays. You guessed it...we broke down the stringers that held up the mow.

Dad went out and cut some 6" dia. walnut trees (with a crosscut saw), trimmed them up, used a screwjack to raise the floor, and fixed the problem.

Those logs held that floor up until the barn was torn down in about 2001.

Thanks for the reply.

That baler could've had the C60, C113 or the C123 engine. We had one of those baler's during WW2 that had the Wisconsin engine and 2 men had to tie
the wires sitting on the baler. I was only 9 or 10 back then and I drove the tractor hauling the bales. Hal

Dad and his Cousin had a Case that was a hand tie before the 50T, it had a Wisconsin on it. The 50T came with either a Cub eng or a Continal, A while back I checked this with a friend that worked at a IH dealer ship for almost 40 years he is 83 or 84 now and he said Cub or Continal.

It could've been a Case, I know it had the Wisconsin. Been a long time ago. Hal

I'm just glad I was always too young to do the wire-punch or wire-tie jobs, for sure.

I remember Dad telling about a job they did for a guy. It was Johnson Grass, but it started out as corn and the Johnson Grass took it then the river got over it. Dad didn't know all this when he took the job. He said four of them went and every round they rotated one position Tractor to baler seat then to other seat then the shade tree, then back to tractor etc. He said that was the dirtyest mess he was ever in.

No doubt that was a nasty job. I just think it's great that the "rookies" didn't bet stuck on the bale chamber for the whole job.
