With all the great advice in this forum from other country folk I'm taking a little liberty and stretching topics. We live in an area of artesion wells. Ours is 95' deep and has been flowing for 53 years. We run it into a tank and pump from that. The overflow runs into a nearby creek. The water is "hard", but cool and good. It does have a distinct smell. Not sulpher, but kind of the old drain type smell. Does anyone else have a similar system ? Does anyone treat the water in the tank in a way to keep the rust down and keep the water fresh ? If so what do ya'll do ? I promise to talk tractors after this !

Don't have that system, but my well overflows the casing in wet seasons Pump is in the well.
I've been told the smell is natural gas, it is
worst coming from the faucet, but not noticible
in coffee or anything out of the fridge. Try lighting your water with a match.

In my opinion its your piping not the water. I would use pvc when ever possible.

Farm Show Magazine ran an article about a guy in Iowa that treats his well with hydrogen peroxide. Says it takes out smell and keeps iron in suspension and doesn't corrode pipes like chlorine. Uses a squeeze pump to inject into well.www.farmshow.com

Where I grew up we had a 250' deep well with sulfur and iron. I didn't think much of it, my city friends would talk about how bad our water smelled! I would go to town and almost gag on the chlorine in their water! All in what you get used to, I guess.

I think our wells are similar. Mine is a 200" deep flow well too. I have it tested every once in a while and it comes back good, but even so, I get a smell. Not an unpleasant smell, but a smell just the same. The well man showed me how to correct that. My well is 100" from the house. Where the pipe 90s over to start to the house, I put a tee with a pipe extending up in the air about 4" with a valve on top. I turn the pump off and drain the water and pressure. I then pour a gallon of bleach in the pipe, close the valve, turn on the pump, go inside and open all the faucets one at a time until I smell a hint of bleach, close the faucets, wait 4 hours, turn on all the faucets a little for 30 minutes, and the water is as pure as rain. No more smell for a year or two.

The UV light kills any bugs or bacteria. You still drink the bugs, they're just dead.

If the amount of water is serving your needs, I would have a sample tested by a reliable lab to assess bacteria counts and minerals. You might not want to use the county inspector due to the consequences of finding out the truth! It is necessary for health to know what you're drinking, or not drinking from then on.
My rural home in Montana had water.
3700 parts per million disolved solids (mostly magnesium and calcium salts)
500 ft deep
natural gas bubbled out of it like co2 in a Coke
required a 1000 gal. tank to seperate the gas (not enough to harvest, but raw water run into a sink would explode!!! if ignited).
We used a reverse osmosis system for drinking water, and untreated for washing flushing etc.

Welp, we had a 35' well that served the farm for almost 70 years but I had to put a new well in because of additional cattle and renters. We augered a 75 foot well, new pump and a ultra violet light, have clear cool water safe to drink, 6 gallons a minute 24/7 if you want to draw that much. My well was $11,000 with pump, not cheap but worth the money...Mike in Exeter Ontario

The ultra viloet light kills any microbes. Very efficient way to ensure "clean" water. We have them at the food plant I work at. Also have them on an ultra-pure water system I use in the lab. De-ionized water run thru a carbon and H-OH exchange bed, then reverse osmosis and UV light. Comes out perfect 18 Mohm water. Tastes awful and you wouldn"t want to drink too much!
