To start off, I have to warn you that I'm an Allis man. I recently acquired a Farmall M, about 1948 model. Rumors are floating around the neighborhood that ther's red in my shed, so I need to sell it before the rumor is verified. I'll never live it down. It is in great shape. No dents or rust, all shields in place, has fenders, original paint in good shape. Only flaw is where muffler clamp worn into hood. Runs good, but pops out of fifth. What is a good asking price, with bad gear and with it fixed. What is needed to fix fifth gear? Is it like the H discribed a few ? prior to this one, or do I need to split tracter and replace it? As I said before, I farm with Allis', so I'm used to fixing junk LOL.

You don't have to split the tractor to fix the 5th gear problem, but you do have to remove the transmission cover which means taking off everything from the gas tank down, seat, steering support tower and so on. Once you have the cover off you can likely determine what is wrong. I suspect worn out 4/5 sliding gear and/or worn out bearings. If that is the case, then you have to drop the lift all hydralic unit out, disconnect and remove the main drive shaft from the clutch and where it connects to the transmission input shaft. In other words, it's not a simple job. I don't know what you paid for it, but parts to fix it if you have to do bearings and the gear will likely run $400 or more. After you fix it, you will have a $1500 tractor.

Multi-color people are more diverse than single color people, and also have more knowledge of tractors in general. Most, not all of the 5th gear shifting problems are due to worn shifter forks that simply need building up. Does not require splitting the tractor unless the "gears" are worn. 5th is direct drive, it engages by pushing one shaft into another.

We won't hold your orange blood against you! You won't have to split your tractor regardless of the damage. I would remove the seat assembly, the steering and light post and trans cover. Make sure your tractor is in neutral!! After you have determined the problem you will need a helping hand to align the forks while the cover is replaced. The problem could be as simple as a weak spring under the ball bearing in the shift rail or as severe as a chipped gear. If you determine the gear need be replaced You will have to remove the belly pump and disconnect the drive line from the tranny. IH refers to this as a bolt but resembles an in-line coupler and can be a bear to remove. The value of your tractor is hard to determine. I would watch the sale prices for M's for a couple of weeks and list accordingly. You never know your blood may begin to run red afterall!! Great Luck ED.
