I have a small area around the house that I would like to use a small rider on. The H is a bit big for going around the house and shrubs and such. I have a bad leg so I like to keep my push mowning to a min. I would be putting approx. an hour a month during mowing season on one. Am I better off buying a new "cheap" mower (Wal mart, Home depot, Lowes) or looking around and finding a well built brand name mower that is well used. I would like to stay in the $500 range. Is what I'm asking reasonalbe? Thanks for any replies. If we don't get some rain or snow down this way I guess I won't have worry about cutting grass anyway.

The best little machine for what you need is a little Snapper they will last for ever and they are cheap to maintain . You can pick up a good used 1 for around 800 to 1000 and that will be the last one you buy, They just go a little slow but sounds like you dont need a 20hp machine.

Buy good stuff even if it is older. in reply to Paul Shuler, 02-13-2006 16:39:08
If you can work on one, buy an older JD, Cub Cadet, Wheel Horse, Toro, or Case/Ingersoll.

I spend a hundred dollars or so on my JD 210 every three-four years. You won't get by cheaper than that with a new Huffy or Murray.

Do not get a cheap mower from wal-mart (crap-mart) because my dad got one from there and it ran good for 2 years then the carb went bad and had to have it rebuilt and then the mower deck bearings went and many other problems. He also had a Really old sears mower he got used and that had less problems than the much newer wal-mart mower. So get a good brand one new or used.

Paul: I see many of the same problems you are encountering. These tractors just don't work well around trees, shrubs and other ornamentals. I suspect I can get in a wee bit closer to those plants with Super A than you can with the H.

However in all my years I've never seen anything to match a Woods for mowing quality. The guy I bought the Woods from openly admits it does much better mowing than his new Zero turn Kubota.

Personally I am giving consideration to buying an 8N or like tractor to mount my woods mower on, would fit under and up close to trees better than the SA does. It's lower center of graviety would make it some better on terraces, etc. But then I want my Super A for other work.

If your good with a wrench and can work on one, heres an idea. We picked up a Yazoo mower this summer at and auction, payed some where around $100-150 for it and then another $50 for repairs and its a great old mower and does almost the same stuff a ZTR mower does.

I can trim close with my Super A. Although it may be a little tough getting on with a bad leg but would last a lot longer the a comparably pried yuppie machine.

An hour a month? I'll trade yards, takes me 2 hours every 5 days. You won't get much for $500. But, for your limited use I would buy a new Walmart, etc $1000-$1500 throw away type, or the cheapest you can find. JD, Cub Cadet, etc can be found used for less than $1000, and will eventually need repairs. I paid $5300 for a new JD hydro zero turn in 1996, it gets a workout.

I mow 8 acres but just wanted something small to go right up around the house and we have a steep area around a retaining wall. So about 20 or 30 min.s everytime I mow would be about all it would see. I do the rest with my very manly H with a 6' belly mower. Now if I had a buddy that lived no farther away than say KS with a nice zero turn hydro that wouldn't mind loaning it out everyother weekend that would be great. Just kidding CNKS.

I'll trade you my mower for your yard. The yard is easy, it's the hundred or so trees I insist on mowing around -- I should just let them grow up in weeds like everyone else in my neighborhood does.

Any Cadet would be nice.
They are easy on the controlls and last a long time.

If you watch the sales, you can find a good running Case 444/446/448 for $500 or a little more. It will still be running after you have to throw away the throw away model. They are not zero turn, but are small enough to do a decent job around the bushes and stuff like that.
