thanks I will try these things out. I was just curious about how to check a six volt coil. Also to find the governor, where its located. The motor revs high, I have a hard time puting it in gear when this happens. I sent for a book on owners manual, from yesterdays tractor. Maybe that will help. I assume it will take a few weeks to get it to me..but till then thanks for the answers. :)

A simple ohm meter can easily tell you if the coil is definitely BAD, but even if it passes theses tests, its absolutely no guarantee its GOOD, cuz its not any high voltage breakdown test and she's not warmed up. If you get her to spark like Hal described, its basically good UNLESS she fails once shes warmed up that is!!!!!

There should be around 1.5 to 2 ohms primary DC resistance as measured between its lil + and - terminals. If its OPEN (or very high resistance) its definitely BAD.

There should be somewhere of several thousand ohms from the high voltage secondary output (the big center top HV coil terminal) to the other lil terminals. If its open (or very low resistance) its BAD.

Theres should be an OPEN circuit from any of the 3 terminals to the case, or one of the windings is shorted out.

I dont know beans about the governor, been wayyyyy tooo long.

Andrew, When you say you wanna know if your coil is working, do you really mean its specifically the COIL only that youre interested in, or is that youre not getting any spark at say the plugs and wanna know if its the coil or maybe several different things that might be the cause?? I ask cuz the coil is NOT the first thing I would suspect as the cause of non firing. Theres a few tests you can easily perform that will tell if a coil is definitely bad, however, unless and until its used for a sufficient period to warm up, the simple tests you could perform dont guarantee its totally good.

Still, if it passes the test Hal laid out for you below, it PLUS several other ignition components (including points n condensor) are likely okay, so thats a darn good start.

If your tractor starts the coil is ok. If it doesn't start or you think you have a weak coil
pull the coil wire from distributor cap and hold it within 1/8-1/4" of a good ground on the tractor frame. Have someone attempt to start engine with the ignition switch on while you hold the coil wire. Use a pair of insulated pliers
so you don't get bitten. You should have a hot blue spark.

Your throttle linkage should be connected to your governor. Check your linkage for any binding.
