Good Day
I converted my C over to 12 volts and used a rebuilt Delco 10SI that I had bought last year. Wired it according to Bob M diagrams other than I used a diode instead of a light. On start up everything looked good, 14+ volts out of alternator, positive swing on ammeter. Took the old girl for a run down the road, looked at ammeter and it was pegged over. Idled back and it came back some. Got home and put voltmeter on alternator and it was puting out over 16 volts at fast idle. Also realized that the fuse was blown for the lights (I had them on). Started to doubt my wiring skills, did some more checking, everything pointed to alternator. Went to a different auto parts store and got a rebuilt Delco 10SI, bolted it on and hey - it works as advertised!

So... the question is - did the internal regulator pack in? And is it replacable, or do I have to exchange the entire alternator?

You always have the answers! I had a quick look at the site, now I just need a source for a regulator (preferably in Canada) and I can fix this alternator and use it for my next conversion!

Robert - Sounds like the interal regulator went bad - and they do sometimes.... Another (long shot) possibility is a bit of metal got between the regulator shorting tab and the alternator back cover. This bypasses the regulator causing the alternator to "full field" and go overvoltage.

Like Bob indicates below, the 10SI regulator is cheap and easy to replace. No special tools are required and it can be accomplished without removing it from the tractor.

Bob M - I kinda figured that the internal regulator had gone beserk, but as this was a newly rebuilt (first installation) I now may be inclined to agree that maybe something got between the regulator shorting tab and case ground. How do I find the shorting tab on the alternator?

Bob - Really appreciate your input, if you can't get to it, maybe I can just do a search on regulator replacement! And if you know where I can get one???

John T - I guess knowing that a "new" alternator fixed the problem, my wiring is ok. That said, I agree that a resistor is a good idea, just didn't have any. And - Radio Shack no longer exists in Canada! So, I have to come up with another source for diodes and resistors!

Robert - The regulator shorting tab is a metal tab inside a "D" shaped hole on the back of the alternator. If you orient the BAT terminal at 12 o'clock you'll find opening positioned at about 4 o'clock. (Or if you post back your email I can send you a photo showing the hole & tab).

Any starter/alternator shop can sell you a new regulator. Around here they get about $8 for 'em.

For the resistor, simply use a #168 or #194 side marker/instrument panel lamp rather than a resistor - it'll work fine, and will double as a "battery" idiot light for the alternator.

Radio Shack is now called "The Source" here in Canada. I was in one the other day and they still have a large selection of diodes and resistors.

I didn't know that! I went into a "used to be Radio Shack" store up here in the valley and they looked at me like I had 3 heads!

The internal electronic regulator is pretty easy to change, and costs between about $3.00 and $30.00, depending upon where you buy it.

Some time ago, I posted detailed instructions for changing the regulator on one of these boards. I don't have time to type that much right now, if I find it in the archives I will post a link later.

Robert, I dont work on those alternators, but my best guess if if shes cranking out 16 volts even coupled up to a battery for a load (is it??)

ANDDDDD DDD if theres a good wire from its rear main output stud to the lil side No. 2 Voltage Sensor Terminal (or else to the battery) IS THERE??? cuz thats where it senses voltage to perform its internal regulator functions.

Then I suspect YES its an internal regulator problem, but Im not sure nor I bet your local auto parts house does either if you can buy it seperately. If theres an alternator repair shop nearby, Im sure they can tell you.

On your new Alternator wiring, as far as that other lil No. 1 side Excitation Circuit terminal, I ALWAYS recommend a 10 ohm current limiting safety resistor which could serve to protect the internal diodes, and then if she still tends to run on even after the ignition is turned off, I then add the diode to prevent backfeed.
