Farmall A with exhaust lift

I recently purchased a 1947 Farmall A. It has a exhaust lift to raise the cultivators. Does anyone know how many came this way. Its the first i have ran across. It works great. Thanks

Most all of the A's and B' here in Ia where I live came with the exhaust lift. It was an attachment made by IH. The cylinder was mounted in different places for different implements. It was on the left front for the cultivator and on the left side lying down for the mounted plow.I grew up with a B and cultivated corn when I was 9. A kid could run it because he or she didn't have to cope with the hand lift. IH was going to put it on their larger tractors but decided to go to oil hydraulics instead.

Thanks for the relpies. I got the exhaust lift manual and owners manual. Its a real straight little one owner tractor and I was thinking about taking off the lift. It works great but I think it hurts the appearance of the tractor some. Just trying to decide what to do with it.

Like Gene said, there must have been a lot of them. But what is unusual today is to have one that is complete and working.

I had one at a show last year and the word got out that it worked. Seemed like every 10 minutes somebody came by looking for a demonstration.

Need a manual for the exhaust lift? I had one, but sold it, but I think a copy is on my computer and I could burn a CD. Send me an E mail. I'm not at home, so will be next week before I can answer.

They must have made tons of them as it is not uncommon to see parts of the linkage still on the tractor. Bracket is still on the throttle or even the linkage mounted below the gas tank. I have some on As and Bs also have a BN-187 plow B-187 plow cults for A and B and BN Veggie cult for an A all exhaust lift can also make them hand lift if needed. The cycl was mounted different places for different implements as they had planters front and rear,middlebusters sickle mowers that used the system. They are not rare.

Here is a picture of the most common sign that an exhaust lift was once on an A or B. This is the only part left on our B from the exhaust lift. Gene is a great source of info on these as are a few others here. There is also a copy of Red Power you can order from their website which has a good article on the exhaust lift. September/October 2003 has the article by Jim Becker. Recommended to me by the author, it was a great resource. It has the schematic from the owners manual, but I can send you that also if you need it. HTH....Dave

You've got a rare creature there. Not necessarily because not very many were made, but because the exhaust lift stuff became obsolete with hydraulics, and got left on a pile behind the shed. Parts were lost, many were sold off for scrap... The old A could still pull a wagon, but the newer tractors did all the cultivating and other "real" work because they had hydraulics.

None came that way - it's aftermarket, but may be made by IH. There are two kinds that I know of. One is mounted vertically at teh left fron of the tractor. The other is mounted horizontally on the left side of the tractor.
