I was looking at a hobby tractor today on a dealers lot. The salesman claimed that the little Cub 185 had been overhauled last year with a shop bill of 3400+ dollars. This was for the ENGINE ONLY, nothing else had been touched (possibly a new clutch while the engine was out). Would an honest shop have charged that kind of money on something that had not been dropped from a plane?

so how much is he asking for the tractor? Thats what important.I fell confident in saying he didnt spend 3400 rebuilding the engine alone.

I have to agree Greg_Ky. If it was just the engine and nothing else, the slowest mechanic in the world at $80.00 an hour couldn"t have possibly made it cost more than $2500.00 for the most rebuilt Cub engine in the world unless he had his parts made out of some other exotic metal. But like others said, if you get into mags., carbs., radiator bolsters, clutches, etc. etc. it could add up quick and the 3400+ could be achieved.

You got screwed also , I can have and 855 cummins decked counter bore repaired line bored new cam bearing installed hot tanked for less then that . God is everybody getting easy or what . Just ask Larry 806 what one company wanted for a clutch rebuild till he called there hand . To bore and finish a hole in a non sleeve block should not go over 25 bucks per hole and 45 bucks for a valve job on a 4 cyl. cub and 25 for hot tanking and if they are getting that far out of hand on prices then we should let the starve as there is someone else out there that wants the work and is glad to have you walk thru the door. Get a ferm price quote in writting before any work is done and hold them to it they are getting away with murder .

I just completely overhauled a cub engine. I did all the disassembly and reassembly myself, so had quite a few hours into it. Cubs can be expensive to overhaul because they do not have sleeves, so you have to bore out if worn. I spent $900 at NAPA shop getting the mains and rod bearing housings trued up, head and deck planed, block hot solvent dipped, and valves replaced and ground. I didn't have to have the cylinders bored or get new pistons, I only needed new rings as the previous owner had done a half job on an overhaul. Secondly, you can spend another $400 on rebuilt carb and magneto. If you add labor to it I could see where you could get to the $3000+ number. Roger

I don't know were you live but out here in Washington State the shops get anywere for 65 to 85 an hour, put 40hours on a tractor that adds up to a lot of money just for labor. If the generator/alternator was rebuilt it's a hundred bucks an it they rebuilt the starter that another hundred, cab kits a cheap but takes time to rebuilt it, like the other guy who responed i'd say at leat $600 if not more for the overhaul (that in a real shop not someones back door garage). Ask for a list of the parts an labor that was put into the tractor, if the guy knows how much it cost he should have a list of what was done. I boughta 1953 Cub last year, engine runs good, no smoke an the compression is right up there, new plugs an point along with plug wires, it needs alot of TLS, new rear seals, new hood, new radiator an number of small parts. I paided $1850 for it an have another $1000 in minor parts an paint along with tires an front wheel weights, not counting my time I have put into it. Over 3K can come very quickly when you add in labor costs, if you want it offer him a lower price like $2800 an see what he has to say, if he looks at you funny an states no way the you can walk away or if he states ok then you have a tractor. If you want it an he wants to sell it you bought can come to a price you an he are happy with, if your not happy with the price he wants then walk away there will be another tractor around the corner waiting for you I'm sure. only my two cents, good lucj :o)
