I need some help and any help is extremely appreciated. I just bought a Farmall 706 at an auction for $1900. The motor has been completely overhauled (what I am told and I have it apart and it definitely has new pistons, pins, rings, and sleeves. All new gaskets everywhere, new valves and guides....basically everything looks new). I have the motor completely torn down because it had a knock in the front of the engine. I checked the crank and it has been turned under .010 and looks good. The piston pins are all in great shape. The pistons and sleeves are both in great shape. I have not had the crank checked for out of round yet however. What do you all think my problem is? The knock could not be heard at an idle. When you throttled it up it would knock. The oil pressure on the tractor was 35-40psi. What do you all think? I have heard of 706's needing to run on higher octane fuel, would this cause a distinct knock in these motors? I pull OLIVER tractors so know nothing about the IH engine. The tractor did run good as far as hitting all 6 cylinders goes. No missing! I am scratching my head here. I know it is probably something simple that I haven't found, but I NEED help!!! Thanks in advance for any help you can give. Thanks, TONY O.

I looked into the governor thing, and sure enough the weights have been hitting the walls of the housing. Would this definitely cause a KNOCK? The knock was pretty hard sounding like a rod loose on the crank. Like I said though, the crank and rods all check out good! What do you all think?
THANKS,

Tony

Just had a 560 come in the shop like that. Guy toren it down overhauled it put it back togeather and it still knocked. We got it in a pulled the governor off and sure enuff the weight pins were wore hiting the case making it knock when opened up. I have seen this several time recently as this tractors are getting alot of hours on them. Thats the first thing we check when we buy them for salvage with a knock and 2 outa 10 times thats what it is. Nick

Without hearing the knock it’s really hard to say. I overhauled a Chevy 350 once that had been freshly bored to 0.020” over. It had a knock in it from startup that got worse as the engine warmed up. Took a few days of head scratching before I finally pulled one head and found what still embarrasses me to this day.

The kit for the 0.020” pistons had one piston in it stamped “STD” on the top. It had made it past the machine shop man that put the piston on the rod, and past me cleaning it, installing the rings, and finally installing it in the engine. Yup, embarrassed, but learned from the experience. I know that you don’t have an overbore kit, but…if you haven’t checked them for size, it’s a place to look.

Forgot to mention, it is a 263 gasser tractor.

I have adjusted the timing on the tractor two times before I tore it down. That never helped any. I checked my waterpump and also the camshaft gear. Both of these items are in great shape and look new as well.

This'll sound stupid, I once tore an IH engine down for a knock. Turned out there was a dent in the oil pan that was just touching a rod end at high speed. The crank moved just enough when accleerated to allow a rod to tap the pan. That was a 300 Utility.

How about piston pin fit? in reply to TonyO, 02-21-2006 21:21:32
A friend of mine spent a whole lot of money getting rid of a knock in an Olds 350 diesel once. One pin was loose.

Have you checked the gear on the camshaft?

if its a diesel its gonna make funky noises cause thats the nature of the beast. If its a gas and the noise is coming from the front of the engine you should check the water pump's condition and also try to adjust your timing and see if that stops the knock.

I would have the crankshaft measured while you have it apart. The shaft may have too much clearance on the bearings. Are you sure the timing isn't advanced too far? Hal

What kind of engine is it? Diesel? Gas? Propane?

Maybe you should check the torque on the rod bolts.
