The tachometer on my Farmall 340 quit working. Seems to me the problem is in the gear assembly for the tachometer drive. If I put an electric drill on the tach cable, the tachometer runs fine. I connect the cable to the tach drive near the distributor, and the tach will work for awhile and then stop. Seems like the cable is not connecting to something or a gear is stripped or something in the drive. Anyone have any experience with this? Also, if parts needed are available Case IH.

The cable and gear were readily availible at a CaseIH dealership for me. Luckily I didnt have to replace the gear housing piece like i originally thought, because they could only find one, over in central Wisconsin, which was $150 plus shipping.

I guess if you cant find the gear, have someone else check their dealership or parts store or have someone machine one for you.

The local dealer said they were not available, but I got on the Internet and got one from a dealer in Wisconsin. Even just the plasitic gears as $50. Glad that I could get one for a 40+ year old tractor

Thanks

The cable end could be turning in the gear. If the gear looks good on disassembly, replacing the core (with an automotive spedo cable --cheep--)can work well.

Can an electric tach replace the original?

Sure, Sun SuperTach will fit the hole (last on I did anyway) just follow the directions, It will not please the originality police. I always seal the edge of the glass with clear Lexcel Acrylic sealant to prevent water entry.

The gear assembly has 3-4 teeth missing. I tried to get a replacement at the local Case IH dealer (Part # 369 695 R91) but they said not available. Any ideas as to where to look, if a machine shop could make one out of plastic, or if any way to repair it. Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Larry

Don't know what would be involved. I just checked with the local Case-IH dealer and the gear assembly (369 695 R91) and the entire package (369 694 R91)neither one are not available. I wonder if a machine shop could make one out of plastic (since it is a plastic gear) without a huge expense??

I would guess that the gear could be found (or duplicated by a competant spedo shop. Annother place might be a good transmission rebuilder They have Spedo gear systems to assist customers with dramatic gauge issues!

Found one at a dealer in Wisconsin. Not cheap ($50+) but glad to get one for a 40+ year old tractor.

Thanks

My dad had the same problem on his 340 utility, the gear had gotten stuck and stripped out so all we did was replace the gear and cable, which we got at CaseIH, they are availible, but expensive. The gear and cable cost about $50 each.

Thanks, It might have stripped one very cold day with the I started the tractor. I suppose the grease/oil in there could have been pretty solid. Only thing I can figure anyway. I have not taken it apart to see if the gear is stripped. Maybe I need to do something to clean 40+ years of old oil/grease out of there.

Thanks

Larry

It's very common for that tach drive to strip out. Made of plastic.
