I went and looked at a Farmall H the other day, and was giving it the usual checks and was unable to locate the engine oil dipstick???? Where is it hidden on this model of tractor?

That is what I do I fill it up to the upper petcock and drain it out the upper petcock to get the right oil level. You will get used to it like I did. Make sure you catch the oil and do not reuse it.

The petcocks were designed for kerosene or distillate fuel. Since it does not burn as well as gas, the excess accumulated in the oil pan. When using those fuels you were supposed to daily drain the contaminated oil down to the lower petcock and fill with new oil to the upper. Any level between the two during the day was ok. With gas it is best to fill to the upper and not let it get below the lower. Some people only add oil when it doesn't run out the lower. If you use that method, and your tractor uses any oil at all (most do use some), you will not know when the oil dropped below the lower petcock, and may actually run low on oil. For those who know how much oil their engine uses, I suppose that's ok. I have always filled to the upper petcock.

CNKS: Good advice, I might add, don't fill it above the top petcock. When these old 4 cylinder Farmall gassers are over full, they pop crank seals.

I loaned my SA to a neighbor once, told him how to use the petcocks. Problem was he only opened petcock 1/4 turn and nothing came out, thus he added 4 qts to be safe. He brought the tractor home, told my wife, SA was hard on oil. That night I drained off 3 qts and my front crank seal was leaking. He didn't come to help change the seal, just told me what a H@## of a poor setup it was.

A few days later I saw him with the rear brake drums off his car. Just for fun I thought I'd ask if he knew what he was doing. Very sharply he responded, "I suppose you think I'm stupid." I advised him I didn't say that, didn't tell him what I was thinking.

Folks just have to understand why IH did it that way, and you covered it well.

Now I know why my dad said never add more than a quart at a time.

Al: Your dad was right on top of the issue. Most folks consider this petcock set up to be slow, but you put a quart in that same basic engine Farmall 300 with the dipstick, and an accurate reading will not come any quicker with dipstick than with petcock.

One thing about my experience on my Super A coming home 3 quarts over full, I clearly knew where the dipstick was.

If at the proper level, it may take a couple of minutes for the oil to run out. I wait until I'm sure it's not going to run out then add maybe a quarter quart at a time. Although as a kid, I just added until it ran out, probably typically a half quart high, because I did not wait long enough for it to start dripping. If it took more than a quart, we knew the tractor was beginning to use oil.

The above responders are correct. I believe you want it at a level where no oil comes out of the top petcock but oil must drip from bottom pet cock. That is to check high and low levels.

On those Farmalls you have to check the oil level down on the oil pan ,theirs two petcocks that you open to check the oil level.
