The farmall M I have did not have a battery in it when I got it. I am putting a new battery in but I am not sure if I should hook it up with positive ground or negative ground. How do you know which way it should be hooked up???

If the rest of the wiring system is set up correctly, look at the coil. If the wire to the distributor is connected to the - post then it's a negative ground. If the wire to the distributor is connected to the + post, then it's a positive ground.

Take a look at the old battery cables to see which
cable one is the ground cable. Should be connected to tractor frame. There's a difference in the hole size for connecting your battery cables to the battery. The cable with the larger hole is for the positive terminal. If
your ground cable has the larger hole your tractor is still using + positive ground. Hal

If the tractor has battery ignition look to see
where the wire that is connected on the coil that
goes to the distributor. If your tractor's battery is + grounded, the + terminal on the coil
goes to the distributor. If it uses a negative
ground on the battery, the - negative terminal on the coil goes to the distributor. Hal

If it's still 6 volt it's + ground and if it has
been converted to 12 volts with an alternator it should be negative - ground. Hal
