alright well just rebuilt the engine on my old m and now im just trying to get it to turn over and its like the starter doesnt have enough power to turn it over. i have a fully charged 6 volt battery and also a battery charger. if i pull the starter out it kicks out and spins just fine but when i try to get it to work in the tractor all i get is a clunk adn a buzz. then i turned the engine over by hand thinkin this might help and still the same. then i tried using the battery charger and turn it up to 12 volts and hit the starter with it and all i got was a louder buzz. anyone have any idea? bad starter? i dont think the engine is too tight because i can turn it over by hand with no spark plugs fairly easily. thanks alot!

The buzzing might be the battery charger delivering pulsating direct current to the starter & battery. Does the buzzing noise occur at all times or just with the charger hooked up? What size battery did you use in the tractor? If it's a group 1 6 volt, even if fully charged, it isn't large enough.

I would use 00 battery cables on the tractor due to the amperage draw. You need all connections nice and shiny too. That includes the ground
surface. Paint and rust are good insulators.

Most auto machine shops will check your starter
to see if it's working ok under load. Hal

well i have never actually had this tractor running. i bought it knowing it needed a rebuild but other than that i thought everything was good on it. i took off all connections and i cleaned every bolt and wire extremely well adn i put all new nuts and washers on and i still have nothing except a buzzzzz. it kicks it out alright and it will spin but when you put the weight of the engine on that it wont. it just buzz's. i tried loosening the bolt and everything and i still didnt get anything. im not sure what it is unless its in the starter. or the field plate. i think ill go and get it checked out today.

I think your on the right track. If the contacts are good and you can turn the engine by hand I would think the starter motor itself might be the problem. Replace or rewind may be the solution.

If it worked Ok before your took everything apart I would check your connections, Especially the ground contact between the starter and the frame. Did you paint the tractor while it was apart. A bit of paint can ruin a good connection. You can also try jump starting it with the cables right to the starter terminal. This might tell you if its the switch.

Your starter may be getting hung up in the ring gear. Leave the bolts on the starter a little loose then hit the starter and see if it will work.
