My son was given a 1950 M.to rebuild, unfortunately the axles have been torched to make a mower tractor. How much work is it to replace these? Have access to older 1941 axles. Are they interchangeable? Any comments are welcome.

The bull gears can be removed and replaced through PTO opening but personaly I had rather remove deck cover than try to wrestle them on through the small hole. Since you would be removing both of them I would be bleeding fron tip of fingers to elbow and run out of cuss words if I was trying to work them through hole. Would guess they weigh close to 50 lbs each. Just my opinion.

The 1941 axles will work in your 1950 M. It is moderately difficult to replace the axles. I would not reccomended removing the axle housing too, as Harold suggests, for the following reasons.

#1 Weigh. The axle and housing together are heavy enough that you will need two people to lift them, while one man can lift the axle alone relatively easily.

#2 More work. More weight equals more work, unless you happen to have an overhead crane.

All you need it an engine hoist, wish I had an overhead crane. I have done both axles on a C Super H, and 460 with my hoist, working alone. The M axles are heavier, but it will still work.

Easiest to just unbolt the bull gear and remove the complete axle housing containg axle and install axle housing with axle from 41 model, rebolt axle housing and bull gear and you are ready to go. Repete on other side. You can go in through PTO hole and you won't have to remove the transmission top.
