Saw the strangest thing today at the local wrecking yard. They called me to come look at this "thing" that just got dropped off. It appears to be an I.H small frame tractor with A castings and a 6 cylinder motor that ran using 3 holes for power and three holes for building pressure in tanks mounted under what looks like a W-6 or W-9 gas tank. Has two big I.D plates on the motor which say Schramm company out of Pennsylvania. and big S on center caps of wide front end wheels. Has 8 bolt hubs and small axle wheels like a 240 or Super C? Stangest thing I've ever seen and wonder if anybody knows what this thing is or needs some parts off the motor or pressure system. Looks like it was used in industrial setting or county maint. dept? Hey Migraine, I was up in your back yard yesterday. I delivered a truck to Lynden but with the 11 hour round trip on company time, I didn't have time to stop. Next time I hope I can take the time to jaw with ya. I'd love to see that yard with the Schramm Motor tractor.

Schramm adapted all sorts of commonly available engines to compressor duty. Typically these they ran on half the engine's cylinders. The other half of the cylinders were fitted with special heads and manifolding to pump air. They are kind of weird-sounding machines, but are well engineered and long-lived.

IHC engines probably were the most commonly used. But I've also seen Minneapolis Moline, Buda and Chevy inline engines, also Ford V8's (both flathead and OHV) and Wisconsin air cooled V4's in tow-behind Schramm compressors.

The Schramm Pneumatractor was not particularly effective as a tractor (heavy, underpowered and a fuel hungry). However as a compressor it's ability to move itself around in rough terrain and to perform occasional tractor duties (eg. pulling other equimment, doing light blade work, etc) made it very attractive to roadway contractors, town highway departments, etc in the 50's and 60's. Many thousands were sold.

Mornin' Howard,

That's a self-propelled air compressor. Knew a guy once that had an air outfit set up with 2 Chevy 235s running in tandem.

Hey! Did you get that 186 Hydro bought for me yet? :>)

Those were rather common back in the late 40s and then into the 50s

It sounds like you saw a Schramm Pneumatractor air compressor.

The photo is from the website: http://www.oldengine.org/shows/findl97/

Schramm made all sorts of large air compressors, using 1/2 the cylinders of an engine for power, and the other 1/2 as the compressor.

I had a site bookmarked with some photos and a company history, but I can't seem to find it tonight.

Try a search on this site, there's LOTS of posts about Schramm units.

The link below is to the company, as it exists today.

Hey Migraine;Several months ago I posed a similar question.I also have a Schramm compressor and it is a pretty husky size four cylinder machine with two engine cylinders, the other two are complessors. This outfit appears to have been built by Minneappolis Moline. The valve tappet side cover is about twenty eight inches in length X four inches in width.Cast into the cover are two M M letters 3 inches high that stand out one half inch in typical Minne Moe style. It appears that no one here had ever seen one of these but the person answering my question said that he was sure that International had built some.

Thanks for the pictures and replies guys. I took all the posts to the dealer today and he also says thanks. This is is big 6 cylinder gas motor but I can't tell what make. Definitely a I.H. frame with correct R1 R2 codes and is 1955 model of something. Looks kinda like a super C rear frame or 200 maybe. Anyway its too far gone to restore but he is willing to sell parts to help somebody out that needs some. Give me a shout. Migraine
