Friend called me last night and said he knew of a tractor near by for sale. Like Allan...gotta go and look at it.
It is a 404 Farmall, narrow front, 3 point, no power steering. He wanted 1500 for it...so I said hand me the keys.
I never paid a lot of attention to the engine. It ran good all the way home. When we got it in the barn and started looking it over it seems not to be a 135. The block has 149 on it.
Anyone ever heard of a 149? I thought they went from 135 to 153.
Tractor seems ok to hang a finish mower on...after I put an over running PTO shaft on it.

Bill: Sounds like you got yourself a decent little tractor. I'm curious about this number 149, just where is that located and is it cast in place or stamped. Most of my experience has been with C-113, C-123 then up to C-169 an onward, thus I've never been up close on a C-135. My tractors all have that cubic inch figure cast in place 3/4" high digets and the C is infront of the number. You didn't indicate whether the 149 had C infront of it. Now my carburated tractors have been all older than your 404, thus that practice could have been dropped. One exception was a 504 and I didn't keep that one long enough to remember.

Looks just like the 113 and 135 numbers on the older models Hugh. Never heard of a 149 though.

I just got 404 Farmall 2 weeks ago. Runs and starts good few dings and bruises and needs traction control lever put back on. Seems like guys just never lubricate these things and then when they are stuck they just yank on 'em till they break. Mine has all new rubber on it and I gave 1600 for it so you are right there. I'll look at my engine number when I get a chance. Migraine

It wouldn't be the only time IH's engine designation didn't match the number stamped in the block... Case in point, the D360. It's stamped "358" on the block.

What tractor? 886 could have either the U.S. built D-360 or the German D-358.

Well...1500 is not bad for a decent little tractor...heck, ya can't buy a good lawn tractor for that.
A friend had a 340F....looks like about the same tractor to me.

You darn right.

If it runs and it's red, it's sure worth that.

Heck, I saw a little John Deere L sell for $4K last spring and couldn't understand all the hub-bub on that one.

'Course now, I've a weakness fer red tractors too. :>)
