Just got a 1940 H and the front wheels wobble terribly. What can I do to to correct this? If possible step by step instuctions would help. Can"t find nothing in the manuals that address this problem. Thanks, Randy G.

Thanks for the help. I have plenty of mechancal ability. But even proffessional mechanics use service manuals to start a project in a new area. There is no such thing as a mechanic/ doctor that knows everything. If they work on my tractor with out reference to a book or others, I will take it else where.

If its a WFE a lot of the problem could be in the toe in/out adjustment. Even a 1/4 inch of toe in can make a big difference in wobble at speed.

Step 1: Take it apart. It's not that complicated. Just take it one bolt at a time, keep track of what came from where (digital camera is handy), and really look long and hard at how things fit together.
Step 2: Figure out what's loose, because there's usually no one thing wrong. It could be one thing that's really loose, or a combination of many things that are slightly loose. You have to examine the entire system from the steering wheel on down to the front wheels. It's all connected, and easy to follow. There's no black magic or things to go "SPROING!" when you remove the wrong bolt. Be not afraid.
Step 3: Do what it takes to fix it, including replacing parts, tightening bolts, shimming loose fits with cut-up beer cans, etc..

That's as step-by-step as you're going to get for free, my friend. This hobby requires some mechanical aptitude, a little blind faith, a moderate amount of bravery, and logical thinking. That's all stuff that EVERYONE has even if they don't think so.

Well said Nat!
I might add that reading the archives on this forum would probably reveal a lot of information!

Randy, about half of the wobble trouble is usually in the gear under the nosecone piece covering the radiator. Take the radiator cap off, remove the four bolts holding the nosecone on, lift it off and now you will see the end of the steering rod going into a geerbox shaped in a circle. Take the small bolts out of the cover on the geerbox and by hand turn the steering shaft. As you turn the shaft you will see a worm gear turning a beveled gear inside. This will tell you how much play you are getting at this point, usually where the most play is. One way to help this part is take the big nut off the top of the flat gear and turn the gear over or if it is a round gear, turn it around some so it uses another part of the gear. After this if it still has play in it, check the u-joints, the bolster (the big shaft goin down to the front wheels) bushings, and of course the wheel bearings. that"s about it. It"s pretty simple, just a lot of different parts that could all lend to the wobble. Harley
