Hi, I'm currently prepping my 1939 Farmall H for paint(serial # 4587) I want to keep the 39 as original as possible. Many of the origianl photo's I've seen and advertisements for the "new" 1939 tractors show the H's and M's having the larger horizontal bars on the grill painted silver. Many of the restored one's I'm seeing are totally red like any other H grill.

Did the 39's originally have silver bars? I know this is an unsual question, but thanks for any input! Rob

I may be totally wrong, and someone will correct me if I am, but I think the silver bars were actually chrome strips, and I don't think those ever made it to production. I have seen the same photos, and i have seen several '39s at shows, but I have never seen a '39 at a show or elsewhere that had the silver bars on the grille.

That would very much make sense. The only thing that would make me second guess that is a color add that I have from 1939 advertising the H and M. There is an up-close picture of the grill on the H, and I know photography wasn't what it is today, but you can actually see the silver paint-brush strokes on the grill?

Keep in mind that all illustrations in early brochures and advertising (and many illustrations in later material) were made using pre-production tractors.

Those types of material are notoriously poor representations of production tractors.

I don't think the silver bars ever made it to production, but would like to see solid evidence otherwise.

That is a good point-didn't think of that fact. I've never heard of this conversation, but I think a valid one. Thanks Again!
