What is the best way for me to tell if I should replace or rebuild my magneto. I'm about to replace the coil, points, & rotor on my H4 magneto, and I'm wondering with the age of the current unit if it wouldn't be wise to just replace it with a rebuilt unit since I plan to continue to work this machine for a long time. There are a lot of magneto fans on this forum but I am not one of them. After almost 60 years experience (kids went to work young back in my day) with letter series tractors with both magnetoes and distributors I will take distributor for simplicity, cost of repair and dependability. Back when we were farming with Hs and Ms they usualy ran from 16 to 24 hours a day 6 days a week in tillage seasons and we had better service with distributors. Some say magneto is great because you can start tractor with dead battery but I swore off of hand cranking tractors many years ago. If it were mine I would lose the magneto and install distributor and cost will probaly be less than buying or rebuilding magneto. Just one more opinion.

I pulled a distributor off a 350 and put it on my H.It works great.Tractor starts so much faster with the battery ignition.

In the long run the mag will be less trouble. I have some that havent been touched in many years like 20 or so. Two of them run every year in the 3 day tractor ride.

Check the magnets for magnetism. Use a flatblade
screwdriver and touch those magnets. Should feel a strong pull of the magnets. Hal

How about converting it over to a distributor ?? Have an upright one, vertical after market one, that needs points, condensor, etc. for $85.00 shipped in lower 48. Pictures.
