I recently purchased a Farmall A, and we just got it running today. It seems to be overheating though, the radiator boils allot. Is this normal for these tractors. I noticed that it does not have a water pump to move the coolant, it just looks like it circulates by it self. Is this normal for these tractors also, or can you put water pumps on them, I dont know if the super A's have water pumps or not. I also may just need a new radiator, that its all cloged up if they cant take a water pump. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The timing being too far advanced could cause the engine to run hot.

You need to check the radiator tubes for being clogged. Permanent antifreeze will cause this
if you lose the rust inhibitor. This usually requires a radiator shop to rod out the tubes.
It may be cheaper to go with a new radiator if this is the problem. Hal

First thing would be to take the radiator off so you can see if the fins are plugged and do a good inspection of the core. Your problem probably is not in the radiator. When you have the rad off take off the lower housing going to the block. By using compressed air and water get the junk out of that passage and by looking in that passage you can see nickle sized holes at the base of the sleeves these probably are the culprits as they get plugged. Using a rag to help plugg the bottom hole where you took off the housing put the hose in there to back flush doing that and compressed air you should be able to get the four holes cleaned out. If you want to add a water pump you can just get one for a SC make sure it comes with pulley as you dont have one.The pump bolt on where you took off the lower housing and you need a new fan belt for a SC with water pump. You dont need a thermostat nor a pressure cap on the radiator just use what you have and i will guarantee it will keep your engine cool. When you get the block and radiator clean you could get along without water pump so that adding the pump would be just another choice. I will put pumps if i am building an engine for using heavy on a belley mower. I have one customer who mows around 9a with the six foot model says he should have bought one years ago. glad to help anytime.

It is a non pressure,thermo-siphon system. I had a over heating problem with my A. To fix it I pulled the radiator off stuck a garden hose in it and flushed it out. Did in with the engine to. While the radiator was off I stuck the hose in the top hose inlet and let it run until I got clear water. Worked for me. Bill
PS wash the radiator from the side core [fins] could pluged with dirt.

Have you checked the thermostat?? Also have you flushed the rad?? You probably need to flush the system and also maybe replace the thermostat

Thanks Guys, Ill try flushing the system, so Im gathering that if the sytem is all flushed and everything is circulating on its own the way it is suposed to that it shouldnt need, or cant even have a water pump, which is why they didnt have any in the first place. Im going to try flushing the radiator and block out, and if that doesnt do it, I may need a new radiator then, right?
