I found a "promising" cub (ealy 50s?) that has most of what I want, but the owner says it has a PTO problem. Here is his discription:

"The PTO gear is getting worn out. Probably needs shaft bushing. I also welded on the piece that slides the PTO gear onto the main shaft because the knob was getting worn out and I couldn't order a piece from the IH dealer. When I welded on that piece, I couldn't find a brass bushing for the shaft so I used a 44 mag casing. It worked fine and there's no slop."

I am not familar with Cubs at all, (lot of experience with 350s, 560s, 656 etc..) and have ahard time visualizing what he's talking about. How much work am I looking at here and what kind of dollars in parts?

Thanks for your replies.

If you are going to use that cub for pto work rember that the pto turns backwards of most other tractors. there for most pto driven equipment will not work.

The PTO is quite simple, and easy to work on on a Cub. It's directly connected to the main input shaft on the transmission by a sliding collar that is in turn actuated by that little lever under the seat. Something, somewhere in that setup is worn badly, but fear not, parts are relatively inexpensive and plentiful. Check out tm tractor parts or jp tractor salvage.
