H fan belt

Hi, It's me again! I was trying to get the belt tightened up this morning with no sucess. I removed the little stud with the locking nut on it but didn't find how it works. Also what is the thing that is in front of the fan with 2 springs??

That thing with the springs in front of the fan is what drives the water pump. The water pump shaft comes out through the front of the fan and is not attached otherwise to the belt pulley. The fan runs on ball bearings that ride on an extension of the water pump body. The pump shaft comes out through that extension and is driven by the "thing with springs". It's called a full floating shaft drive, meaning there is no load on the pump shaft except torque. The pump body carries the load of the belt. Hope this is not too confusing.

There is a easy way too get them loose a millwright taught me this years ago and it works 99 percent of the time. First take the set screw out and place some penetrating oil on the threads and start the tractor and let it run for about ten minutes . Turn the engine off and it will be loose the belt friction will work it loose make sure you take the set screw out so it wont sling thru the radiator. Give it a try youll be suprised.

Well you got it right by backing off the holding nut. You didn't have to completely remove the stud, but that is neither here nor there now that it's out. You will see that that stud actually threads through the pulley and into a detent to keep the pulley from backing out once it's been adjusted. Now for the fun part of trying to get that pulley loosened up. By turning the forward portion of the pulley counter clockwise, it will allow the belt to sit deeper in the groove (loose belt). Once the belt in on the necessary pulleys, go ahead and turn that pulley in and you will see the belt tighten up as the pulley becomes more narrow (tight belt). Once you have the correct tension on the belt, make sure the threaded hole where the stud belongs is lined up with a detent in the shaft.

The fun part usually comes when you realize that the pulley is frozen. A little bit of penetrating oil and some mild heat are usually enough, but once you do get them loosened up make sure you anti-sieze them so it isn't an issue in the future.

Also and FYI...make sure you have the water pump belt adjusted tight enough that it won't slap the lower radiator tube that connects the engine to the lower radiator outlet. I've seen lots of water leaks due to such situations.

Tractor vet is the belt tensioning the same proceedure for a 52 SM ? I have been too busy using the tractor to learn all the ins and outs. Thanks Tallperson

You have to turn the outer shive on the water punpm pulley there is a set screw that you back off -take out what ever and with a long drift punch TAPP not pound as they will break REAL EASY the best way i have found is to clean the threads all around the outer pulley lub well with good panther Pee not WD 40 and tap it loose and with a real small wire brush get down behind the belt and clean the threads and work the pulley by hand so it turns nice and free remove the belt and work it so that it spins in and out freely by hand it may take a couple hours but it is a lot better then having to replace the outer part and a lot easier on the pocket book. Dont worry about the two studs and spring . look before ya leap and study it over to understand what you are working on and how it does work .
