Well after seding back the first alternator I got one that worked!! I got that Hitachi to fit nice under the hood. with the use of Bob"s digrams and other people"s help here is charging with no "SPARKS"!. I got a question though after the battery is fully charged The battery shows a 12.5 - 12.6volts. while running. Is this how these alternators work? Should it show a higher charge than that? Thanks Andrew

Your engine may be running off the battery voltage. If it was my tractor I would lift the ground cable from the battery to see if the engine keeps running. If it keeps running your alternator is putting out voltage, if it quits no output from the alternator. Hal

I agree with Bob on the charging voltage. It should be 13.5 to 14.5 volts with your engine at 1/2 throttle. Check your truck or car's charging voltage at a fast idle or a little higher. This is the normal voltage for a 12 volt system. I had a 1972 Ford LTD with the 429cid engine and the charging voltage was 15.25 volts. Never had any battery problems either. Hal
PS: The Ford shop manual had that voltage in it too.

12.5 VDC is right on the money. They figure an additional .1 VDC per cell (surface charge)...so that pretty much puts you where you ought to be. Congrats on getting it figured out.

I know my H fully charged (6 volt system) is typically 6.3 VDC.

If the battery shows 12.5 Volts with the tractor running, the alternator is NOT charging, at least not adequately.

You should be seeing 13.5 to 14.5 Volts.

I checked the battery on my H that has an alternator and it showed 14.5volts. So I guess that this is not good for the Super H. I got everthing hooked up that Hitachi right I think . With the "bat" going to the ammeter with the "S" hooked to the "bat" terminal on the alternator and the "L" going to the other side of the terminal on the ammeter. It does charge I think alittle like WOT, is 12.88volts or so. Do I need something else? Or wired wrong.

Thanks Andrew

Check the wiring on the H to see if you have the Super H wired the same. Hal

The H I have has a delco alternator, its set up as a one wire job. I looked at it as a reference but I dont think its the same, since the hitichi is a 3 wire one. Andrew

I thought they were the same make. If your wiring is correct your alternator should be checked for output. May have a shorted diode.
