Diesel Question

This question is OT for this forum but you guys have never let me down. I have a 1998 Cub Cadet compact tractor with a 20hp. three cylinder diesel engine (I think it is a Mitsubushi) I hadn"t started the tractor in about 6 weeks and when I went to start it last week the battery had given up. I just put a new battery in it tonight, and now it won"t start. It is cranking over really good, the glow plugs check out and I can hear the electric fuel pump working. It really never got that cold here this winter and I put anti-gel stuff in the fuel last fall before I parked it in the workshop. The tractor only has 62 hours on it, so I hope nothing major is wore out. This is the first diesel I have ever owned, I am more acustomed to working on my 49 Super A. I don"t want to just start tearing into it, so any ideas what is wrong or what I should be looking for would be much appreciated.

As always thanks,

Mike (Reddog)

Not sure about your engine, but the Detroit diesel
has an emergency shutdown. If someone accidently
pulls this the engine will smoke, but won't start.
When this is activated it shuts off the intake air to the engine. The Cummins uses a lot of overspeed shutdown. This is usually connected to the tach drive driven by the cam. If this engine happens to go above the set speed on the overspeed it won't start until the overspeed is reset. I would give that engine a little whiff of ether to see if it fires without the glowplugs.

fuel, air , compression ,should start with those. it's not getting one of those three. if you have air in the fuel line that would cause it not to start also.

My a/c 170 is tempermental if it is cool outside. but it doesn't have a glowplug or intake heater.

Well if it is smoking then it is getting fuel so then the glow plugs are not working so i would be checking the glow plug relay and maybe the glow plugs .The shut down seleniod is a round metal deal with and arm -rod comming out of it going to the lever on the injection pump and there are some wires going to the back of it , when you turn the key on this opens the furl valve in the pump when the key is turned off a spring pushes it foward to shut off the fuel . when this does not work then there is no smoke . If the glowplugs don't work there is smoke but no fire it could be just a stuck relay.

Thanks Tractor Vet, rechecked everything including pulling all the glow plugs out and testing them on the bench. Two out of three glow plugs are bad, I assume once I get these replaced my problems will be over. Thanks for the advice.
