Hey Everyone.

Finally got my 1946 Farmall H Home. Before we moved it from the dealer we switched the back wheels becasue they were dished in and i just couldn"t get any width on the back for better stability. So we used a crane that had to be 50+ years old, he says he doesn"t move, they jsut use it for unloading. After some ether and warm up that old crane started well! the wheels weren"t too bad to get off. WE had been spraying them. They def had fluid in them and we used a front end loader to move the wheels. took about 3 hours to do and then off to home it was. I"ll post as many pics as i could!

It"s good to see a young fellow taking an interest in this old machinery. The H is a great little tractor and I hope you get the same amount of enjoyment driving it and working around it as I did when I was your age 55 years ago. Good Luck,
Sid.

Looks good to me Ryan if the correct police do not like I would not let it bother me. I have been driving letter series tractors longer than most on board have been on earth and would guess that half I have driven would not pass correct police inspection.

One thing I find refreshing Ryan when I go to tractor shows is when someone dares to do something different. I love H's, heck I own one. But if you have seen one H you have about seen them all. Same with JD A's and B's. As long as it does not make something unsafe it makes your tractor unique. When I first started going to shows I spent all my time looking at the shiney tractors. Now it seems I find more pleasure looking at ones that stand out a little. Like the old rusty WK 40 or something like that. And you wonder how the crap did they git that to run. It's yours, have fun with it and be safe to enjoy it for years. Heck 40 years from now your grandkids will love it cause grandpa turned his wheels around funny and they wouldn't think of changing it.

Tough crowd in here today, eh?

If IH didn't want the wheels set out that wide, they wouldn't have made the axles that long! What about the H's that came with the extra wide 100" axles?

Looks nice and stable now. A+ for safety. I think using the crane was a good idea as well, definitaly had enough capacity to hold the tractor up.

Now, if you go bouncing across corn rows in road gear the wrong way, you might break an axle. But, if you are using the tractor appropriately I imagine it should run another 50 years pretty easily. Thanks for sharing your work and pictures!

Ryan,
Nice looking tractor. Ive done a lot of mowing in rough places with an H and it is very stable. The proper place for the weights is whereever you prefer them. If you are going to have the wheels that wide make sure to keep grease in the bearings and keep the work light.

Don"t concern yourself with any rude comments.
Take it from someone who used to spend a lot of time in chat rooms that people who feel the need to use a lot of exclamation points are not very sure of themselves.

Im sure you realize that none of the regulars in here would ever make rude comments like that.

Good Luck

We've got a 1954 Super H with one set of one piece wheel weights on the inside. We've owned the tractor for a long time and it was that way when we purchased it. The weights and the bolts that hold them on are the same faded orange as the rest of the tractor. I'd always assumed that it came that way from the factory. Maybe not?

Ryan, please understand that what you do with your H, and where the wheels, and weights are located, is up to you. Heavy loads on the tractor frame, or axle housings, with the wheels extended to the max can cause wear on bearings, or in extreme conditions axle breakage. Under light (mowing cultivating, driving around)put them where you want to (especially for stability on side hills). The opinions of some contributors as to your common sense are not shared by all.

Yeah you need to take em off and move the weights to the outside as well as to move the wheels in or you'll ring one of those axles off with any kind of load on her. use a little common sense next time!!!!! !!!!! !!!!

Yes, I must say you are a little rude. I had gotten lots of advice from others with H's and the dealer himself, and found there isn't much of a diffrence in the wieghts being on the outside. It was a dangerous job as it is, not to mention taking and rehanging wheels weights. I don't apprecaite your assumption that i have no common sense. I guess it only takes one person to really rain on my parade.

changing the wheels isn't dangerous unless you do it how you did, much safer one side at a time, and removing the weights would make the tires lighter, which equals safer and easier, dont take me for an a**hole or nothin i'm trying to be helpful with a little constructive criticism.

Yeah,

Now you can take 'em off again and put the weights on the outside of the wheels where they belong. :>)

I thought something looked different in that pic but couldnt quite put my finger on it. Have never seen weights on the inside, would there be a benefit? Would make a lot more work to add/subtract them.

Normally, you won't ever take the weights off anyway, so what difference does it make?

I agree with you, Nat.

I bought this H from an old lad who had been running Hs since they came out new. He liked 'em this way and never broke anything.

And I kinda like 'em this way myself.
Ryan, don't let a few people on here get your goat.

Thnaks for the support everyone. I look at this board MANY times Daily....in fact everytime i have a break at Penn State between classes i check the board. I have learned a wealth of information from this board. Yeah, i'm only 20, and i wanted to have those wheels as wide as i cold get them temporarly whille i get to know and learn how to operate the H properly. I have learned alot from reading everybody's safety warning on narrow front ends etc.

Thanks everyone

Ryan
