I am restoring a 51' Farmall H. I'm going to buy Case's implement enamel. I was wondering how much paint you think it would take. I'm told 1 gallon should be enough. What is your opinion? Also is the exhaust manifold supposed to be red, black, or silver? I have seen them painted all three of those colors and i was currious on what color it is supposed to be.

You're most likely going to use more than a gallon and less than two. Plus thinner and hardener.

Please don't treat hardener lightly -- the stuff is very dangerous, a charcoal mask will not filter it--It requires a full face mask or hood, fed by supplied air, with the intake outside the painting area. I will not recommend hardener to anyone without those precautions -- what they do afterward is their problem.

N oset standard on that one. Depends on the brand of the paint. How thin you make it , how many coats you put on. How humid it is yes that does some thing to it. Even if you use hardner or you don't. Can be as little as a gallion or up to 5 gallions depending on how many coats etc.

Minimum 5 quarts, maybe a gallon if you don't paint a lot separately -- the cheaper CIH paint may or may not take more, I've never used it. I painted a Super H disassembled, 3 coats, with about 5 quarts of PPG Omni, but that paint will cover in two coats, as recommended on the label, the third coat is for insurance.

I'm with Tractor Vet on this - I've got 3 gal on my H. You typically need more paint and less reducer when using synthetic enamel (not as much pigment in these paints), although I can't speak to Case paint. Also, I took all the parts off my tractor and painted them and that takes more paint as well.

Well lets put it this way there is 3 1/2 gallons on my S/MTA since you lose to the wind or fan and just paint everything red except the wheels Oh yea there is also a galon of primer on mine so it took 4 1/2 gallons . Even when i would paint a semi mounted plow it took a gallion to do it wright .

a gallon is enough paint need mineral spirits to thin it a little. i like the mainfold black or silver. also you can paint the axels black and the caps on the front hubs black and that looks nice as well.

I would like to know how you can get away with just a gal. and yes you can do the axels black the rest well that is your choise but not the way they came from the factory as for the manifold pain it all red and the heat will turn the red black in no time if worked. .

You don"t take it all apart and paint everything together like you see them at auctions. Look like crap most of the time. Cheap to do though and some people are impressed.

Well Brian, that's how they did it at the factory... Save for the hood panels, ignition, rims and tires, the tractor was painted COMPLETELY assembled, all at once.

Those tractors at auctions are painted with ZERO prep work. You're lucky if they hose the tractor off before they start slapping paint on it. It's not because they were painted assembled. It's because it was a crappy paint job meant to cover up some other major flaw.

Well let see here when we did all the tractors that i have painted by my buddy who BTW has painted more tractors then we would like to remember we remove the hood grill fuel tank and fender pto sheild tiresand wheels and have at it and every nock and cranny is painted and we would put atleast 6 coates on not heavy coates then we would let the tractor set for a couple days while we got the sheet metal ready then paint the rims and install them on the tractor and pull it out then do the sheet metal this would take us a week to do one tractor from start to finish .Now i wish i could post a picture of some of the ones on here but the scanner is down and i do not have one of them high tech camars . A couple years back i posted them on the tales board my S/MTA and my one 806 along with my old 4300 semi . Now if ya'll have a video of the 94 Red power round up the MTa was one of the two in the video . Along with about seven other tractors that made the video like Bruntons 1566 with the seven bottom plow when he dropped in in them middel of the track during the peraide and rolled seven farrows in the track the boys down there at Hookstown fair board were not happy camper.

Pictures, high tech cameras, videos, Fastline, do not show all the defects and missed places in the paint. The ONLY way to get a uniform coat on everything is to disassemble. IH did not do that at the factory, but factory paint was not very good anyway. Each person can do what he pleases. I disassemble, I guess because I want to spend a year on the one or two day job the some others do. But, I don't have anything else to do--might as well do as good a job as I can. Painting cannot be hurried as you get what you do.

Well we did not do a Mil check on every square inch of surface to make sure that the paint was the correct thickness but everything got cover red and shiney with no runs no bare spots and the big thing about it i like it and it does not just set under a blanket and put on a trailer only go out to a show because it is just a FRIGGEN TRACTOR NOT A TRAILER QUEEN she has been in the mud in the dust of the worked ground been in the barn in the shuut and hauled many loads of shuut ground feed played at the tractor pulls done hayrides peraidsplowed disked and we are not just talken three or four rounds at a plow day we are talken 12 hours or more or pullen a 21 hole 510 drill and she has sat out a time or two because it is a friggen tractor not some god that you make burnt offerings to. and a littel soap and water and polish and it is good to go. ANd one other thing i would lay money down that the jobs that MV puts on a tractor are some of the best in the country .

As I said, each person can do as he pleases. I made my comments solely because if a new painter wants to do a good job, that good jobs take time. AND, on the H/M etc, if you did not remove the air cleaner, governor, carb, oil filter housing, clutch and brake pedals, etc, there is no paint behind them, they are whatever color they were before painting -- whoops, guess doing that makes it a trailer queen.
