H engine specs

My 1940 H has a replacement engine. I'm not exactly sure of its origin. The bore was likely 3 7/16. It mics at 3.445. How much wear can a guy reasonably take up w/ new rings and still have decent compression? Ideally, new pistons and sleeves would be installed, but my wife wants a new house, not a new tractor engine, if you know what I mean. The tractor will likely not do any heavy tillage work, but will be doing some sickle mowing and MAYBE occassionally pull a 10' disc, but not often if at all.

I just checked the kit prices on this site, and there are several for the H, none costing more than $350

The thing is that it isn"t worn evenly to the 3.445 diameter. If you check with a bore gauge, it will probably show that it is worn egg shaped and different from the top to the bottom. Doing it right is best, but if you want to do it on the cheap, just putting a S&P kit in can"t be that expensive. Are they maybe $6-700? I don"t think that will make that much of a difference in the house fund, will it? If you"ve taken it apart yourself, you can put the kit in yourself.

I don't think you would be satisfied with just re-ringing that engine. If you going to do an engine rebuild everything needs to be within spec.
That's the sleeves, pistons, crankshaft, bearings, valves, guides, cam bearings and oil pump. This is for having an engine with good oil pressure and will last a long time with proper maintenance. Hal
