Way off topic, but here goes. Am a mid fifties Farmall man who has a family history of heart problems, but not me. Doc put me on blood pressure and cholesteral pills for prevention. The cholesteral and bp are well within normal, whereas before were borderline. However, after 9 months on medication, my best friend lets me down. Different meds were tried, but left me dizzy or with headaches. Doc does not feel that Viagra or similar would be wise. I never had a Farmall fail like this. One of my friends said that I should change my playmate, (on an as wanted basis, not telling Mrs.) but after 34 years, I do not want to start cheating, as other problems will come. Maybe some of you could offer a solution. I did not think that this part of my life was over. Getting older sure ain't any fun. White hair and beard,OK, going bald,OK,growing hair in ears and nose,OK, not getting it up, sure as h-ll not OK! Comments?

Likely the medicine is causing the problem. I'd consider controlling the HBP & Col by diet. Lots of celery will lower blood pressure & certain herbs will bring down the high col. Watch goldfish & listen to a 60 idle to lower BP.

I would recommend having your testosterone level checked. After age 50 it can start to drop pretty rapidly. It has a wide normal range (75-600 pg/ml) so it can still be within a normal range but have dropped from where it used to be. This makes the value sort of relative but if you're around 300 pg/ml, it shows you can use a little extra. Go to an older doc. It's been my experience that younger ones and specialists don't like to write a script for testosterone as the injection is not a guarantee that it will fix the problem. You need to also find someone that can give you a shot (a nurse friend or relative). The doc will send you to a pharmacy that will give you a 50cc bottle for shots of about 2cc's every so often. He may also prescribe a testosterone cream that you rub on every morning. A speciality pharmacy will have to compound the cream. If it works like it should you'll feel the effect within a day or so. There may also be some side benefits as there'll be more bounce in your step and some of the bluesy feelings will abate somewhat. This is the VOE (voice of experience). I have a friend who's done the same thing with the same benefits (our wives are both nurses). We've joked that we feel like experimental lab rats but somehow we don't mind too very much. My friend and I are both on blood pressure medicine as well.
As a side note--you don't see many ads for testosterone by drug companies (like Viagra) because there's no patent on common, everyday testosterone. Good luck.

Hey they are not GODs and if they do not want to set down and talk well then myself i flat up and tell them just how the ground layes.

Dear Faithful Farmall,
I commend you for your courage in discussing a sensitive and embarassing problem that is common to many men. However, I highly recommend you make an appointment with a competent urologist rather than listen to the advice of medicine men on a tractor forum. Would you ask a doctor how to trouble shoot an alternator? Best Wishes

You guys remind me of the old guy who went to the Doc. He said,"Doc I've lost the urge." Doc said, "Well well well, when did you first notice this." " Well", said the old guy," Last night and again this morning."

You are probably better off without Viagra since there's been cases of men going blind. There comes a time when your pole vaulting days are over. Hal

So lets see here your parents tell you when your young if you use it you will go blind then when you get older they say if you use something so you can use it you may go blind. HMMM. Any hoo I agree with age and alot is in your head I cant spell physological. When you have problems dont get in your head that it must be a problem just remind yourself that its a slump and it will get better and sometimes it does. JON

..... i can sympathize with what you are going through..... .i am 57 and take zocor for cholesterol control..... .i have had similar reduction of 'what i had been used to' performance..... i do not have a blood pressure problem but did have the same experience as the other fellow re; viagra (it's good for a head ache)..... .i am in good health overall..... i think it is the age that starts to see us realize that we are not kids anymore..... .talk to your doctor to see if alternate medications might reverse your predicament..... ..if not, well you and the misses can find ways to be intimate and express you love..... .if you haven't 'cheated' before, is now the time to go down that road????? ?..... .best wishes, bill

Hoping my experience might help you get back to tractoring. Am about 10 years older and cholesteral still OK luckily. I take 50mg of Atenolol 2x per day for high blood pressure. Keeps it in check with no effect on my friend.

Thanks for the good words. I understand your name. I guess that I might try to change Docs. Not easy. Also not nice when a good friend, whom you have known all your life, and to whom I have been very good, lets you down like this!

Wheeeuuw.....now thats what I call OT.

1. Viagra was researched and developed as a blood pressure medicine. It does not raise blood pressure although there are other negative reactions in some men. Its FDA prescribed use for ED was just a fluke in R&D.

2. When my own BP (and weight) began to rise to an unhealthy level I decided to try life changes before meds. For 30 days I stopped ALL salt, sugar and meat. At the end of 30 days my BP was back to 125/73 (from 160/95. Thats been 3 months ago and there is still no salt or sugar in our home and we eat very small portions of meat.(I have grown to love beans and rise with cornbread) Go for a walk through the produce dept. of a large store and try things you have never had.
By the way, do not over do fruits, even tho fructose is natural it still inhibits weight loss. Go for the "greens and beans"

I could go on and on but I won't. Try it if you want. You might be happily surprised.

Oh, by the weight, my "friend" has certainly let me know that he is happy with the nutrition changes.

Without writing a book, let me expand on what I feel are 3 important issues:

1. Take a 500mg POTASSIUM supplement 2xdaily. Once along with a one-a-day multi-vitamin and mineral with your first meal of the day and once at bed time. Potassium keeps the sodium levels in our bodies where it should be. Most peole have a 20% Potassium/80%Sodium ratio and it should be the reversed to 80%Potassium/20%sodium. Potassium tabs are over the counter and inexpensive.

2. Eat lots of fresh garlic. Garlic is anti-bacterial, anti-viral and a terrific blood cleanser.

3. The same for Celery. Celery oil is proven to lower blood pressure. Eat fresh or chop both the garlic and celery into sandwiches salads etc.

GET RID OF PREPARED AND PROCESSED FOODS that are taking up space in your home. All prepared and processed foods are loaded with sugars and salt.

We use Sundays as a cooking day, we make up enough beans and rice and whatever to last the week. Use large glass jars for refrigerating. All we buy during the week is fresh greens and some whole grain bread.

You are going to love this. Since we switched to preparing and eating foods the way it was given to us from the ground, OUR FOOD EXPENSES HAVE BEEN CUT IN HALF.

If you want to read more about this just do a search on the web for lower blood pressure naturally or similar wording. Good luck and keep on “tractoring”.

Thomas Donahy has the right idea. You need to find the right MD that will work with you to find a safe solution. Everything I read says there IS a safe solution to the problem, but it may take some work to find it. That being said, Under Cover Doc has a pretty good option to explore, too.
