We have a '43 Farmall H, and have to remove the steering wheel to replace the steering u-joint. we're tried several different pullers, but the jaws keep slipping off, and since it's keyed, we're starting to get stumped.

does anyone know of someway to do this? any experience?

i would greatly appreciate any advice or ideas.

thanks!

Sam.

The steering wheel on my 340 was as difficult. I am not familiar with the H, but perhaps something from my experience may help you.

I used a steering wheel puller, which uses two long bolts that thread into tapped holes in the center ring of the wheel, and a large bolt that puts downward pressure onto the steering shaft. I actually made mine years ago out of 1/2 barstock, but they aren"t that expensive anyway. A harmonic dampener puller may also work. Problem was that due to corrosion there was little metal left on either side where the bolts thread into the steering wheel, , but in the end there was enough. My first mistake was to tighten the puller, and then tap on the center puller bolt with a hammer. I later read in the service manual specifically NOT to do this. They were right - I ended up unseating the rupture disc in the steering housing and had to remove the entire unit to replace it.

What did work, after considerable soaking with Kroil penetrating oil, was applying a 1/2 impact wrench to the steering wheel puller. The impacts broke it free in a matter of seconds.

Mike, When you asked last time I thought you has double wheels. You have a single wheel I have never seen one like that. My be very early F-12 1933. There where some preproduction tractors that my have had this wheel. oldiron29

I always drive them off. Never tryed a puller so I guess it might work. Heat helps.

On my H the wheel was stuck and rusted so bad I had to use a angle grinder to get it off.

Heat from a torch is what you need, but why do you need to remove the steering wheel to replace the u-joint? Just loosen up those collars so they will slide, pull the steering wheel and shaft over the seat towards the back of the tractor, and have at that u-joint.

What worked on my 460 was to get the puller as tight as possible, then use heat. I just used a propane torch. After a couple of minutes it popped off, and I do mean popped -- don't have your head in the way. I just used a normal puller. Mine gripped ok, but I was afraid I was going to bend the wheel.

Big differance between your wheel and his his is a stright shaft where yours was a tappered shaft small spline and less time ferrment his is going to be a tug of war on a stright shaft with a key and lots of aged rust . that is why i said a bearing spliter behind as it will give move clamping force and a flater face to pull against . just a plain old steering wheel puller will work on the new style and the fastest way on them is run the puller down with and impact while holding the wheel to take some of the shock load off the powersteering valve. There have been a couple times on M's that it got to the point that my 5 ton puller would not bring a wheel off the shaft and had to bring out the big gun the twelve ton and it was snap bang pop all the way past the key.

TV, I have pulled both types, it's not rocket science to get a steering wheel off ----

well a good puller will not flex and not slip off so here is another way you will need a bearing spliter and a good puller and add some heat to the hub . The best puler made come fro OTC Snap On or POSI LOC . But the down side is they cost big bucks . The pullers that ya get from Harbor freight and TSC are ok for the things that are just a tad over finger tight.
