Fuel Shutoff Valve Clogging

I have a tip that may have been posted on this site before....maybe several times.

No matter how hard I try not to, it's very easy to get a couple chunks of dirt in the fuel tank on my M when removing the cap to refuel. These chunks would eventually work their way over to the inlet of the fuel shutoff valve and bowl assembly and starve the tractor for gas. To correct this problem, remove the fuel shutoff valve and bowl assembly from the tank. Cut a piece of wire house screen about 3" wide. Roll it tight a couple of rolls and then insert it in the inlet of the shutoff valve. Pinch off the other end of the rolled screen. This home made filter fix works great by stopping the bigger chunks of dirt in the fuel tank. The fine mesh screen above the bowl stops the small stuff.

Most of those old screens rot away. The old timmers would take out the last of it and just rely on the "bowl" part. Old mower parts places have those little screes or go to NAPA. I bought a whole cheap pot metal shut off valve and removed the screen. Put it into the antique chain saw I was working on. An old Mall model 11 beast. Just a dab of permatex around the bottom of the screen and let it set up. The screen should be at least two inches long if possible. I also got hold of the old screen in a REALLY old parts store and it can be cut to size and soildered. One of the neighbors dad had some old window screens from the thirtys in his shed that were brand new. They had BRASS screen in them. It was the top of the line back then. Good hunting. Jeffcat

Another way, remove the complete fuel bowl and shutoff assy. Get a short piece of 1/4" copper tubing, drill the inlet just a shade bigger than the pipe and JB weld it in place. About 1" above the bottom of the tank keeps chunks out of the bowl assy. The larger chunks will set on the bottom and not plug your fuel system.

If you look around you can find the bronze fuel screen in sheets. i see them at tractor shows all the time.

I've seen lots of ford/NH with finger shaped fine screens atop the fuel bowl.

I have done that very same thing and it did solve the problem. I think that when these tractors came from the factory there was such a device already in place, but I've never found as much as the remains of it.
