I plan on doing a little hay work and was wondering if a Farmall H will pull a baler and wagon.

Thanks in advance

Kent: I can not for the life of me understand everyone's concern about stopping. My Farmall 300 had max calcium chloride in 13.6x38 tires with one set wheel weights. We pulled a NH S-69 with thrower and 22' wagons that held 150 - 45# bales thrown in. We didn't have a lot of hills, but the few we had were quite bad. I can never remember stepping on the 300 brakes and sliding. You stepped on the brake and it stopped. We continued to bale hay with 300 even after buying a 560. 560 did run the 9' haybine better, but it wouldn't bale anymore hay in a day than 300.

I cant even begin to comprehend the degree of slope on the hills some of these guys are talking about. Must be mountain goat country.

My concern would not be the ability to pull it.The main concern would be stoping it with a full wagon.

I pull a 268 Hayliner with wagon on fairly uneven land with a Farmall 200. Once in a while I run short on traction, otherwise get along fine. Your tractor should do you fine.

Yes you can bale with a H. Live PTO is nice but not mandatory. That being said being able to do it and it being a pain in the butt are 2 different things.
You would for sure fall in love with a 300 or a 400 with the live pto and TA for a baling tractor.

But the H would be fine wile you collect baling equipment. Thats what I did. Then moved up to a 400.

Can do but no fun.

Best baling combo in the whole wide world.
In my opinion of course.

WE used to pull a wisconsin powered New Holland with a wagon behind it in the flats and hills of our farm In N.E. Penna. On the sidehills, however, you didn't turn uphill with anything except a very light load. Once the wagon was full, the next chore was getting that downhill. All of our wagons were equipped with mechanical brakes and had to be set before proceeding down, o/wise we would have ended up like many a neighbor who tried with that light of a tractor and a loaded wagon - off for a wild ride at best and more serious concequences at worst.

I think Old is on the money with that setup. We use an H with a JD 14T and it really is a decent match...but this is Southern Wisconsin, so we are not bucking any hilly situations. The guys pointing you toward the live PTO are definitely sending you in the right direction. Keeping a consistent windrow all the way across a 10 acre field is next to impossible, not to mention the double windrow you will have on the end of the field (in some cases), so the live PTO is always appreciated. The H will do it for you, but once you use that live PTO...you'll only have the H pulling wagons.

Good luck!

In a pinch we've used our W6 with out any fluid in the tires to bale with our MF 124 square baler and wagon. You don't want to do it on a mountain side, but a reasonable hill isn't too much of a problem if you are careful. It is kind of funny to see such a little tractor pulling around such a rig. Main thing is that if it is a short, hilly field, you will miss the IPTO and the hydraulics to aim the thrower. If it is a relatively long field and smooth, it will not be too different than doing it with a bigger tractor... So, I'd say yes.

Size does matter. How large a baler and how large a wagon? A baler like a New Holland Super 69 with a rack capable of holding 100 bales or so on relatively level ground should not be a problem if the windrows are raked light enough to allow the H to pull the baler without having to pull the transmission out of gear to keep the baler running. Like others have said the live PTO on a baler is VERY handy about as much of a necessity as AC in a car that is owned in Texas…

Flat ground and a small wagon? Yeah, it'll work.

Hilly ground? You might want something bigger.

Kent: Your bigger problem will be lack of live pto, rather than size of tractor. My dad pulled an engine drive baler complete with wagon, up hill and down behind the H. Now, I will admit we didn't have a lot of hills but the few we had were heavy enough. A 300 or 350 with live pto will work much better.

To start with engine drive balers are a pain in your butt, as is any engine that only runs about 2 weeks per year. I know my dad's baler engine wasn't long going down the road once he bought the 300.

It might do ok pulling a small square baler like the JD-14T or 24T. But if you have hilly ground I wouldn't try it.

H was used to pull 14T and wagon on flat ground on home farm, no real problems related to size. IHC 350d with live power handier- about same weight, the live PTO is easier to use. JD 14T is now 'small' baler. RN
