Hydro 70 , Good Tractor ???

Hey Guys and Gals. I "Pull" Letter series ( Super M ) Farmalls and know NOTHING about the Hydros. I am looking at the Hydro 70 that "Wengers" in Meyerstown PA has for sale. I will be bush hogging , roto tilling, york raking etc with it. Is this a Good Reliable Model? I think Alan in NE has one ?? Please tell me what your thoughts are on this Model. What to check out a little closer or to be aware of. Thanks in advance . I always get straight answers here !!

I might be a poor guy to ask. I own a Hydro 86 and put 2-3 hundred hours a year baling hay and loader work. I love the Hydro for that. for other field work I prefer a gear drive and have an old turboed 656 that I dearly love, in fact I just bought a 666 and it also has a turbo. The poor old Hydro with the transmission hogging 15 20 horse and then not having the advantage of the turbo is realy doggy. No wonder it's a love-hate relationship. You do what you want but unless you realy want the infinate speed control you might be happier with a gear drive.

Slightly off topic here, but what's the major difference between a 656 and a 666, apart from a few years and 10hp or so? What seems to make the 656 so desirable, or is it just that more were made?

Hi Strick,

Aside from the light locations, grille, decals and maybe a different style hydraulic hookup, the 656, 666, and 686 are all the same identical tractor.

Likewise, the 656 hydro, Hydro 70 and Hydro 86 are all the same exact tractor except for these small, more or less cosmetic changes.

I deviated in two ways. Bought a gas powered tractor with a hydro. It does everything it is suppposed to do, but I doubt if I'd ever buy another one.

Just too many years of diesel gear drive, I guess.

But them gassers sure start nice when it's cold, don't they? Two block heaters and a battery blanket on my 666 and plug it in for an hour and she starts like summer even in -45�. Now if it just had a hydraulic sump heater like the hydro's..... ..LOL!

Oh heck yeah,

Pops right off on the coldest days and they are kind of a handy little outfit, to be sure.

I just can't get used to a tractor sounding like an IH truck engine. :>)

Well, not exactly Allan. The 656 still had the glow-plug 282 left over from the 560 era. Not to knock it cuz it is one bullet proof engine but the direct starts are more convenient. The later 666 and 686 used either the D312 or maybe was the D310 used in some of them?

Yep, I know.

But, the darned tractor itself is still all the same.

What I mean is, put the 282 in a 686 or the 312 in a 656 and nobody's the wiser; pretty much all alike up and down the line.

Fer what it is worth, I think that old 282 with it's glow plugs started one heck of a lot better than the 310 at anything lower than 'bout 50 degrees. :>)
