40 years ago when these low ash oils first hit the market, it was my understanding Cat developed the oil. I know they where available from other sources before IH had it, or at least in my area.

This is reasonable, as everyone would have had the same problems, and in 1965 Cat would have been a much bigger player the IH. I use these oils in everything, cars , trucks, tractors, even my 4 cycle lawn mower. It's 30+ years old as the IH dealer loaded it in my pickup in 1975, the day I paid him for the new 1066. Until 2 years ago the mower mowed 1/2 acre every summer, and the one item still original is the 4 cycle engine.

Diesel engines are good for 10,000 hours, gas 5,000, most cars and pickups 350,000 miles, between rebuilds using these oils. Sure they may be expensive, check out the cost of rebuild parts.

I"m no expert. But when IH came with their 6 cylinder engines they had problems with those engines burning valves. They determined that the ash level of the oil was leaving deposits on the valves that caused hot spots and those hot spots would basically torch through the valves. The problem seemed to be from the higher RPM that the 6 cylinders run at. From what I"ve heard, that is why IH recommends their low ash oil for their gas tractors. There are explanations having to do with the amount of time the valves are open and closed under load with the governor giving full fuel, creating heat that can't be passed to the head. IH decided the cure was to use an oil with a low ash content. Don't take this as gospel, but it is what I heard. Many oil suppliers have oil with low ash levels. Hope this helps.
