I been seeing alot of talk about types of oil lately and have been thinking of swithcing to a diffrent oil, in one of our tractors, it has not really low oil pressre but not the best either, at full throttle it has about 20 to 25 lbs when hot. I thought of swithching it to 15-40 or straight 40W for summer use. Any thoughts what might be better?
thanks Andrew

My self I never use a multi weight oil in any thing I own, but thats just me I guess. I run a 30W in the winter and a 40 or 50W in the summer depending on which tractor it is.

Really? Your car or truck take the straight weight oil ok?? I don't know where you live but, here in New York, it is way to could to run straight weight oil. And even in my tractors, I don't want that heavy oil in there in the winter. I like the oil pressure up as soon as I start it. That 30 weight moves real slow in the cold.

Ya up that far north I would probably run a 20W in the winter. I'm in Missouri so its not as cold down here and when it is it doesn't stay that way long. I also give my engines a little run time before makeing them work which is also important when its cold out.

Best to fix the problem, but 15W40 may give slightly better oil pressure -- there is no need to EVER use non-detergent. My dad was using detergent in the 50's, it should have been switched over toat least 40-50 years ago. Most stories about the use of non-detergent oil are myths. Break loose sludge? Maybe, but a sludged engine needs an overhaul anyway. There are very few old tractors that have not been overhauled and switched to detergent anyway. It is a much better oil.

CNKS is on target.
The improvement in oils has been much of the reason engines are lasting as much longer as they are.

Cokeing is the formation of carbon/ash deposits on the back side of valves. When an engine has issues with valve stem oil control, and valve cooling issues (valves are cooled by stem to guide conductance, face to seat conductance, and, on the intake, charge cooling of the head of the valve), they coke up. Some 6 cyl IHC engines were notorious for the problem. I believe proper repair (valve guide oil control, with PC style seals)can eliminate most if not all of the problem. JimN

If you're using non-detergent now, stick with it...cause the detergent oils will break up the sludge and clog ports. With a weak oil pump, i'd hang with whatever the manual recommends for the given outdoor temperature
