I used Roundup burn down last fall on an old depleted sod field and plowed it about a month later. I had the soil tested and boy does it need a lot of fertilizer! The ground is all worked and looks great. I'm going to roll it first and then have the local elevator use their Ro-gator to air apply the fertilizer, alfalfa, orchard grass and rye mix all in one trip and then run the roller one more time. I'm planning on 15# alfalfa, 5# orchard grass and 5# annual rye grass per acre for my sheep. Is this about the right mix? Any better ideas?

I put in some alfalfa/orchard grass last spring. Had good luck with plowing, then double/triple discing. Then waiting til the weeds started to emerge and then roundup and used the cultipacker on the same pass. This was in SD. I think you are a little high on the grasses, and wondering if the rye will get going as change from cool to warm affect it a lot. 15/3 was what we planted using brillion drill. But it sure looks god in a couple of places where we made two passes! The deer and pheasants both LOVE the hell out of it!

How much Roundup did you put down and what stage was the alfalfa. I have only been able to get about a 85% kill with 2 litres in the spring with excellent growing conditions. Thanks Darald

You know I just can't remember the exact amount off hand but I remember using a little bit more than what was recomended on the container. Everything looked dead before I plowed it a month later. It did plow very hard and I had to use first gear on my 560D to pull a 4x14" at 8" deep and I have a very strong 560. Second gear was just too hard on the engine. Since I had to go so slow the plow didn't cover very well and I had to disk it last fall after I plowed it just to cover the residue. This stuff hadn't been plowed in 40 years. It looks real nice this Spring.

Lance: I'd go with local ag department's recomendations for your area. After 5 years here at YT, clearly I can see geography is number one when it comes to crop advice. What works well in one area may not work well everywhere.

I'm not suggesting Jim is wrong.

I ran Jimmy's idea, of 5 extra pounds of alfalfa to the mix, by my ag man today and he said that Jimmy's idea was cheap insurance. So, I'm going with 20#s of alfalfa per acre. They're the ones that told me to wait a month after the roundup application before I plowed the old alfalfa patch. I'll let you know how this all turns out. The land in rent free this year because of all the inputs. Next year I have to do all the work and pay an additional $1.00 per bale. I wanted the rye so I'd have something for hay this year. Should get a good cutting.

That is right Hugh, I have a friend that buys hay from S D he says it pays for itself in milk production. I have other friends that have bought Alfalfa from other places, and they also said it has a kick ours doesn't have. The guy Jim buys his from was delivering him a load once, and Jim took him out to see a stand of his Alfalfa that he thought was real good. The man from S D said it's kind of thin isn't it.

There may be a reason and I don't know what it is. But if you were going to plow it why did you apply Roundup first.
Rolling over the sod with a plow would have killed it.
Just wondering . Gary

I always sprayed round-up in the fall and plowed in the sring. After the round-up was sprayed it plowed so easily and I didn't have to disk because the material just fell apart.

Gary: Roundup application before alfalfa is number one in my books. Getting rid of grasses that propagate by rhyzomes is a must. I quite often applied N, get it growing well, then hit it with roundup and plow it. If you do this one should plow within 2 days of round up application.

If I had a bad grass problem, I may give another shot of N after plowing and if I get green more roundup. The rewards are great if the crop following is going to be alfalfa.

You should call the local county farm agent in your area to see what he would recommend. Hal

That mix would be good, but if I were doing it I would add 5 more lbs Alfalfa
