The mild spring pressure, the slow speed of the engine, and the largish size of the surfaces seem to work well. Many modern auto engines, including Volvo and other "quality" marques, use no inserts at all with great success. If they get surface rust in them, use 1000 grit or finer crocus cloth to polish it out. spray with LPS corrosion inhibitor to prevent rust.

The engine has machined bores in the block for the cam journals. Your local auto machine shop can measure them for wear and the cam journals too. Hal
PS: If you had good oil pressure prior to the teardown I would put it together. I would have the main and rod bearings with .001" clearance to .0015".
