A friend of mine transplanted a OS-6 motor in a 400 Farmall because the 400"s engine was all done. Will the ole" girl be lacking much in the final run ? He wanted to keep the live power and the 2-point hitch going which the OS didn"t have.

Thanks for all the responses. The 400 spun a bearing that completely ruined the crank. When the rod came through the block and got the cam there wasn"t too much to salvage. The os-6"s engine is a good strong running engine.

Hard to answer your question without knowing exactly whats being compared. Most all of those engines have been rebuilt with different parts over the years, also what state of tune engines are in means a lot. 50 plus years later theres W6 and M out there with more power than some 400 and 400 tractors with more power than some M.

If the OS-6 engine is overhauled and the 4 inch bore piston/sleeve kit used along with all the 400 engine bolt on stuff, there shouldn't be much difference at all. How much is unuseable in the 400 engine? It wouldn't make much sense to put the old OS-6 engine in the 400 without "freshening it up" anyway.

IH HP for the M, SM, and 400 engines, gasoline, standard configuration: 34,42,45. OS6 engine is same as the M.

While I don't have the hp specs in front of me, remember that a "6" was the same as a plain M, engine-wise, and a 400 was the "approximate" equal. Might be a little loss, but not much, in my estimation.

400 was the UPGRADE to the M, and it was a signifigant upgrade.

A stock M/6 series tractor was 33HP. A stock 400 is something like 48HP. There's quite a bit of difference.

Of course, the OS being like a Super M, so less loss, but I hate to see an intact orchard salvaged out like that.

Seems like there would be a better way.
