656D missing

Ended up the 656D my dad bought new in 1967 when I was 10. The tractor has well over 20,000 hours and the engine has never had anything done other than gaskets replaced. The last 2 years dad had been sick so he only used the tractor maybe 10-20 hours per year cutting hay. The tractor starts good and runs good until you get over 1500 rpm. At that point it developes an uneven miss. This goes away when you put a load to it. Even running down a flat road in 5th it misses but once you start up a small hill it levels off and pulls great. Another point is that the throttle linkage was worn so that it was only running at 1500 rpm max. I adjusted the linkage to get it back to the rated engine speed. Could there be a relationship? Maybe some Stanadyn? Could it be the old fuel which I would say would be about 50/50 with new fuel? Is the pump going bad? Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Thank you all for the "not so good" analysis. Actually that is pretty much what I suspected. I had planned on doing a major overhaul this past winter but didn't get to it. Will try to cut and rake my hay this summer with it since it isn't using much oil and runs good, only about 50 hours worth. Will do a complete rebuild next winter so she will be just like the day the dealer delivered her. I remember that like yesterday. Only "new" tractor my dad ever bought. It has been the most trouble free economical piece of equipment we've ever owned and more than surpassed it's expected life.

That injection pump is on it's way to lunch and hopping that when it does it just shuts down instead of going wide open . get a book and read up on the R &R of said injection pump and send it in to a GOOD pump shop along with the injectors with that many hours on that engine i am thinking that it is long past due for a Major overhaul not just a rebuild . Thats got to be a record on that engine if it has never been down it's liven on barrowed time.

A third vote for rebuilding the injector pump. I'd leave it to the professionals, unless you're a diesel mechanic. Injector pumps can be tricky buggers to deal with.

...and if you were a diesel mechanic, you'd know what was wrong anyway, and wouldn't be asking quesitons, now would you?

I suppose you could try a massive dose of "red bottle" Diesel 9-1-1 fuel treatment and injector cleaner, which you can get at your local Tractor Supply, truck shop, or farm equipment dealer.

I agree with Hal.

With that many hours don't even waste your time foolin' with it.

Take it down and rebuild and put new injectors in it and recondition that pump. New starter, battery, water pump and alternator also.

Probably wouldn't hurt to replace both hydraulic pumps either.

Allan

The pump and injectors are probably needing a rebuild with that many hours of operation. Hal
