No More Dirt In Carbs....

There seems to be recurring posts on dirt in fuel related probems.(crud in carb, etc.)

I have two things that I would like to pass on I believe would prevent a lot of issues. (I learned this after cleaning many fuel lines and carbs and loosing much time in the field)

After you rinse out the fuel tank:

1. Make sure the sediment bowl has a screen in it where it screws into the bottom of the fuel tank.

2. Install an inline filter about half way to the carb from the tank.

You can buy the sediment bowl screens (about the size of half a pen)at any farm supply.

The inline filters start at about $3 at any auto supply. Cut the line and use hose to clamp it in.

I finally learned this about 10 years ago and now every tractor (and truck) I own has this and if I buy a tractor the first thing I do is make sure it has both of these item. I have not had one dirt related problem since.

Sounds like someone tried to shoot you down on that other post. I agree with you on the inline filter, but I use a Fram see through job like you get at Wally World. Works great on grav flow stuff.

Thats the kind I use. The see thru kind. Never had any problem with fuel flow.

Those in-line filters are a waste of time and money. If, as you say, the fine mesh screen in the sediment bowl is in place, and the brass screen in the carburetor fuel inlet is in place and in good condition, there is absolutely no need for an in-line filter. Plus, if you end up getting an in-line filter that is rated for use with a fuel pump, you will not get sufficient fuel flow to the carb.

I have found that standard small inline filters are too restrictive for a gravity fed systems. My solution is to use a filter designed for more flow. There are many options, one inexpensive choice is a filter from a Honda Civic with FI (mid 80s) from an automotive "reuse center". They are mounted on a nice base, and flow freely. JimN

Well, stupid is as stupid does according to Gump. And, one of my Super A's came into my possession with an inline filter only...evidently Farmer Brown had a bad sediment bowl along the way over the last 55 years. Doesn't seem to be any issue with gas flowing through it..one of those see through types. I ain't fixing it either...isn't broke.
