According to an article in Red Power a few years ago, the first Red F-20 was number FA-68749. All before it were McCormick Gray (Van Sickle makes a good version) and all after it were red. Regardless of the serial number, all F-20 wheels and draw bars were red.

The following link will take you to the info you want. Tractors produced after Nov 1, 1936 were to be red.

It was a very dark gray, almost black. In fact I match mine by adding a little white to Rustoleum gloss black. I believe the early Regulars before about 1928 were a lighter gray but there were no color photographs then and all the old guys are dead.

I believe IH changed to Harvester Red, now known as IH 50 in Oct or Nov of 1936 -- so you can go either way, unless you can find the actual month of production. And, there were two shades of gray -- someone else can comment on that.
