Just drained the oil on my H. It"s the first time changed since I bought it. There was so much sludge in the oil pan that the oil wouldn"t drain at first. I haven"t refilled yet. What do you suggest? Drop the pan?

Also replace the thermostat, running cold is why the sludge builds up. It's right on top behind the radiator, only costs a couple of dollars. And don't be surprised if you open the cover and discover the thermostat is missing.

Hadn't thought of that so thanks for the suggestion. I had noticed that the temp gauge doesn't move much even when plowing.

Thanks for the suggestions. Of course, stuff like this always happens on a weekend so I'll wait till Monday to get the oil pan gasket. Joe's Farmall was willing to meet me today (Sunday)for the part but it can wait till tomorrow.

Ya might want to pull the oil pickup and clean out the screen too . If it's like an M it's a floating pickup and it needs to be airtight on top so it floats . My M was so full of sludge it took 15 minutes in a parts washer to get it clean . Doing what CNKS suggests sounds like the way I SHOULD have done it but all I did was pull the pan and scrape about 2" of sludge out of the bottom . While you're in there be sure and yank on all the rods to see if any have bad bearings and look close at the cylinder walls . ...Randy

Drop the pan, remove the valve cover and the plate on the right side of the engine, and clean -- that's where 99% of the sludge is. Then use fresh oil, run it a while and change the oil and filter each time.

Dont know what old would say, but we used to drain the sludge then fill crankcase with 4qts kerosene to 1qt oil and let it run 10 minutes then let it drain all night. Then fill with oil and run for 1 days work then drain again and refill.

There is different ways of doing it for everyone.

You might put a can of DEEP CREEP in the gas to help clean valves.

I've never like to run an engine that way but I also do things other people don't or will not do. Like I will run an engine with out any thing in the cooling system for about 5 minutes or so if I think it has stuck rings. Gets it good and hot and expands the cylinders so the rings have room to expand a little.

I'd fill the pan with diesel or kero and let it sit a day or so. Rock it back and forth every few hours if you can. Then drian that and refill with a good oil. Run it for a day or 2 then change it again. Or you can drop the pan and clean it out but you will still need to change the oil in a week or 2 because dropping the pan will not get it all.
