Am helping dad with a problem on his 424 and specifically the 3 point not working right. When you raise the arms with no load they come up smoothly. If you stand on the arms and raise them, they jump up in one inch increments and if you put an implement on them, doesn't raise. I was reading in his IT manual and one easy thing to check was the hyd. sump return filter. Pulled it and there was a lot of crud in it but not thinking it was enough to block flow. What other possibilities are there?

Without an implement do the arms stay up with when you shut off the tractor?? If not, you have a problem with either the control valve or the lift cylinder. Since the arms won't go up with a load, I suspect the cylinder. There is a shut off valve on the 424 to isolate the cylinder. Look in your manual (hope you have one) and find the valve. Raise the lift arms and close the valve and then shut off the tractor. If the arms go down with the controls still in the raised condition, then the cylinder is not holding. The original pistons on these tractors had a leather seal. To fix this, you will have to remove the top from the hydraulic unit and take it apart enought to get the piston out of the cylinder. They don't have the leather seals anymore, you have to replace the piston with a new one that is made for O rings or take the piston (if it is good enough condition) to a machine shop and have O ring groove cut in it. You'll have find someone that knows what they are doing to properly size the O rings and grooves. The new piston from IH is quite expensive. You can go to a Mahindra dealer and get the piston which will fit for about half the IH price. The early Mahindra tractors were direct copies of the 424 except for the sheet metal. I once owned a 424 and had this same problem which is why I have this info. It's a great tractor. I only sold mine because it did not have Power Steering.

If the filter(s) are clean, and the oil is of the correct type, and clean, I suspect you have internal linkage or adjustment problems in the three-point.

Also, check for leaks in the pump suction line and connections, perhaps as well as the pump shaft seal, and possible pump wear.

Does the tractor have remote hydraulics, in addition to the hitch?

I have a 424, and the hitch has always worked well, but several folks have posted on here about tough problems with the hitch controls.

It would be wise to check the pump output flow and pressure with a Flo-Rater, or equivalent before condemning the hitch mechanism.

If you tear into it, I would recommend having the correct IH Blue Ribbon Service Manual for the 3-point, as it is WAY more detailed than the I&T manual.

If you need the extra help of the genuine manual, email me. I have an extra copy. (If I can find it!)

Just remembered the remotes for the loader are on separate system (pump and reservoir) driven off the front of crankshaft.

I am assuming the correct oil is Hy-Tran. I could not see any leaks in the pump suction line or connections. The pump was brand new from IH approx. 3 years ago. If the pump seal was leaking, should not the engine oil increase on the dipstick? It does have remotes that are for the IH loader and I assume were put on at IH or shortly after dad purchased the tractor.
I have no such thing as a Flo-Rater to check flow and pressure at the pump.

I may take you up on the manual offer!

Also, as I remember, the arms will stay up after shutting off engine but I did not close the valve you were talking about to test this but I do know where it is.

I am inclined in thinking linkage or valve too as you can hear the pump surge at the same time as the arms raise an inch and then quit momentarily. Almost acts like it is grabbing a little oil and pushing it through then either running out of oil or some little check valve is shutting it off for a second. I'm baffled!!!
