Well, I am broken hearted today. My 70 year old friend, I am 65, was killed today doing what he and I like to do...to work on and restore these old tractors.

This is what he did...

He has an Ford 8N with a bush hog on it. For some reason he backed the tractor into the shop, raised the bush hog and put blocks under it and then turned the tractor off. He stuck his upper body up under the bush hog--he had a pipe wrench up under there..I am thinking that he was going to tighten something up. The blocks kicked out from under the bush hog and it settled across his throat and neck...he was found still warm but gone...he had his cell phone in his hand trying to call for help....Guys...be careful.

Don't be in a HURRY.Don't work when you are over tired. Take a look in the front of any old IH operator's manual and you will find many good 'cartoon form safely tips' that still apply. I am posting a set of these on the wall of my shop. Red

People that use a bumper jack and then crawl under their cars are flirting with serious injury or even death. There was incident it where I worked, but in a different section where they up loaded 120mm artillery rounds with more powder to see if the gun would withstand the pressure.

This has been done for years without any problems.
They remove the primer with a spanner wrench and add more powder and reinstall the primer with the
same wrench until snug, then they used an air wrench to torque it.

This man had his own way of of doing this, he used the air wrench to remove the primer and to reinstall it. Had been warned not to do that many times. On this day he was doing the same
procedure and he was in a hurry to finish before lunch so he and his girlfriend could go eat.

We heard a large explosion that was near us, but they're always firing guns so we didn't pay much attention until we saw firetrucks and ambulances
heading that way. He and a co-worker were both killed, his girlfriend had stepped out to go to the bathroom a few minutes before the blast.

The safety office conducted a test to see who was at fault. They took a shell without any powder or propellant and used an air wrench similar to
one used on the explosion to remove the primer.
It was cherry red when removed. A photographer
that I knew was called to the scene to video and photograph the test cell. He said he didn't eat for a week. Hal

That is too bad. I think about all the dumb things I have done with brush hogs. I usually pull the 9n in line in a shallow ditch we have if I have to look under it. That way the brush hog is down, the tractor wont roll and I have some room under it. I have since bought a forklift truck and I stand the mower decks upright and chain and double chain them and work on them standing up. I can see how it could easily hurt or kill you though. Sorry.

Wow.. the worst part is that a 20$ set of limit chains would have saved him...

Sorry to hear of your loss. Thank you for the reminder to be safe. I know I'll keep it in mind as I'm working. Can't think safety too much and it's all to easy to forget for just a second or two.

last spring I thought I would sharpen my blades on the belly mower . Pulled the front wheels of the H up on a 6x6 block. Went to wrenching under the deck and I felt the tractor move. I came flying out to find the block had shifted on the gravel. I was lucky, never again will I be so careless. I am so sorry to here about your friends death. My prayers are with his family

Sorry to hear about the loss.

Had a gentleman locally several years ago that was working under a hay baler and the tire blew out. He was found crushed under the baler.

You just can't be too careful.

Dan

Sorry to hear of your loss.Shame that it only takes a split second of a mistake to be deadly.I agree everyone needs to practice safety first when working on anything.Because the life you save my be your own.

Once again I'm sorry for the loss of your friend and my heart goes out to those affected by this!

My prayers are with you, your friend, and any family that he had. What a sad story. Just goes to show that anything can happen, even if you think you are taking the appropriate cautions. Hopefully your note will make the rest of us think about safety a little bit more.

Joe
