It's been two weeks since I poisoned myself with isocyanates. I'm still coughing up blobs. I was just going to paint the lower, rear, rockers on my Dodge truck, and a couple of mud flaps. Cold and windy outside so I warmed up the shop, had all the doors closed and the fans off. No mask at all. I got about half done and started to feel dizzy. In a few minutes my heart was pounding, and my eyes were watery and I was having trouble getting my breath. I got the hell out of there , went outside and walked about a mile. That night I never got to sleep. I felt like I had a 50 pound bag of cement on my chest. I hyperventilated and had to get a bag over my head. I was filling up with carbon dioxide. The next day I was a little better, and pretty much normal in three, except for the persistent cough. I bought the best 3M ventilator money can buy. I finished the job today, wearing the proper equipment as recommended by those smart guys on this board. Sure is nice to paint and not even know you are painting if you close your eyes!

Too soon old, too late smart, Gordo

A word of warning--you have had a good dose of isocyanates. There is NO charcoal mask, 3M or otherwise that is certiified for hardened paint, unless the concentration is very low such as in a professional downdraft paint booth. If by ventilator, you mean supplied air, you are ok. Supplied air is the only thing that works. I did not know that 3M made one.

Too much stuff to sort through, both on ebay and 3M's web site. The point I want to make is that the intake for whatever unit you have has to be outside your painting area. The one I did see on 3M's site was a belt mounted unit the pulls the air through filters. But, there are no filters that will filter iso's. If yours has an outside intake you are ok.
