A Oil pump / low oil pressure

I have read some of the past posts regarding the number of gaskets that you get. How many of these very thin gaskets do I put back on the pump cover?

My A starts out w/ pressure reading showing 1/2 way on the guage (no markings) but after running for a couple hours barely gets a reading....I'm hoping its the pump cover leaking as has been talked about on previous postings.

Also, should the relieve valve & some type of spring be replaced & if so, where exactly are these items? I have never had the pan off so I am unsure of the configuration of the pump, pump cover, etc.

Where did you find the parts?.... bottom plate, pressure regulator spring and plunger and gasket in the oil pump ??

I talked w/ a local IH dealer & the only thing they could get was the gasket!

You need to plasti gage it, off hand I don't remember the spec but it is in the manual. Also take a sheet of wet/dry sand paper and a sheet of glas and lap the inside surface of the bottom plat until it is flat and all the wear marks fromt the gears are no longer visiable. Take the plasti gage lay a piece on the gears and thghten the plate use the correct numper of gaskets until you get to the right clearance. Again this is in the manual.

What do you mean "plasti gauge" it? I do not have the manual.

Can anyone help out w/ the spec?? Is there a way to do it w/ out a "gauge"?

Plastigage is like a piece of soft monfilament line that is easily crushed and then you match the crushed Plastigage against the illustrations on it's wrapper.

The width it crushes to indicates the clearance.

Here is a drawing of how it appears, used on a bearing.

You can get plastigage for a couple of bucks at an auto supply store.

Have you verified the pump cover is FLAT?

I have not dropped the pan yet. I was going to try this first & hope it takes care of the problem...

Is it really possible the pressure gauge could be bad?? If it reads OK when first started, then how does it go bad after it gets hot??

Hi. Its highly unlikely that the guage itself would show a significant difference in readings as it got hot. Easy enough to swap in another mechanical guage & verify that.

Motor oil gets thinner as it gets hot, & when the engine is worn the pump can"t move enough of the thinner oil to keep the pressure up. A good tight engine will keep oil pressure up against the relief valve all the time, so the guage doesn"t drop when the engine gets hot.

I"m not sure a pump rebuild will solve your problem. If you have worn bearings, then even a good pump can"t hold pressure when the engine is hot.

I"ll probably get shot for saying this, but you can try going to a thicker oil, say 20W-50. Depending on what kind of oil has been previously used & how long its been since it was changed, its also possible that there"s enough crud in the bottom of the pan to clog up the pump intake.

I"d drop the pan first & make sure its clean.

Thanks for the suggestions. I wanted to eliminate all the simple items before deciding a rebuild is in order...

I know the head gasket is leaking as well...could that be a cause for low oil pressure? ... I would think that would taking a gaping hole to cause a loss of oil pressure though???

My Super C (same oil pump as A) had a bolt missing and a piece of the gasket blown out of the bottom plate of the oil pump. And the plate was warped and worn. Like the previous post said, I laid some sandpaper on a flat surface, and sanded on the plate for a long time to get it smooth and relatively flat. Then plasti-gaged it to get the required clearance (mine took two thin gaskets).

I don't think a bad head gasket would be causing your oil pressure problems.

Dropping the pan and removing the oil pump is pretty easy; fix it up and if you still have the problem look for other things wrong (like worn bottom end bearings).

Most likely fixing up the pump will cure it.

I brought my oil pressure in my BN up to tollerable reading by replacing the bottom plate, pressure regulator spring and plunger and gasket in the oil pump. I shold have replaced the gears also but couldn't get the parts by the time I had to have it back together. My engine needs to be rebuilt but this will get me by til then. Dave
