Son-in-Law is having brake problems on his tandem-axle trailer which has hydraulic "Surge" brakes. Whenever he hauls it very far, the hub gets very hot! Once, he had to replace the bearings on the brake axle. Several trailer "Experts" he has contacted are baffled. Any Ideas?

electric brakes seldom used can give problems with brakes dragging and heating or lock-up also. All mechanical things require maintenance. Brakes live in a harsh environment. Electric barkes are simble and do not have hydraulics so maintenance is usually just to keep clean and lubricated at proper points. the controller in the cab gives you more control over the trailer brakes you won't ever get with surge.

I had a 1999 18' car hauler with surge brakes. At first I really liked them, as I could hook up to any truck with brake controller or not. The problem was, with surge brakes, if the trailer sits very much, they start to cause problems. I had a very similar issue with mine, i had repacked the bearings and took it on a 20 mile trip. The wheel bearings and entire rims were getting HOT! Come to find out, the cylnder that pushes the brake pads out was a little corroded, and dragging. Fixed that, then had trouble with the master cylinder. Price to fix that(at local trailer shop)was almost the same as converting to electric brakes! My understanding is surge brakes can be okay, if you use the trailer frequently. If not, they're not great, and require alot of upkeep. I ended up trading trailers to a new one with electric brakes on both axles.
Good luck.

Lot of people forget the coupler, The coupler has to be able to slide in an out with out bindeing. The coulper and tow vehical need to be level, if the coupler is not releasing ( extending back out) it won't draw the fluid back to the master cyl. (draw for lack of better word) simple system just go back to the basics. Have a good day

Several possible causes:
The self adjuster components are assembled incorrectly
The self adjuster has the wrong components, just a little difference makes a large over adjust.
The system is not allowing the complete release of brake force.

I would jack the Wheel and see if it turns freely.
If not, release all possible application, then check.
If still draging, I would blame the self adjusters.

Drag should be just enough to stop the wheel in two to three revolutions when spun hard by hand.
