300 Utility Locked Up?????

My 300 has been in storage for the winter. When I tried to start it today, the engine would not turn over. It seems to be locked up. The oil level was OK and clear, the antifreeze was full. I pulled the plugs thinking a cylinder was full of oil or gas, but nothing. Any ideas on what has taken place with the 300 utility????

Thanks!!!!! I removed the starter, lubricated it and reinstalled it. It started right up and once again runs great!!! Thanks for all the good ideas.

My H used to do this. The Bendix on the starter was worn - gear looked ok, but the spring wasn't releaseing it like it should. Got the starter rebuilt, no problems since.

Unless your tractor has a loader, you should be able to put the tractor in 5th and rock it back and forth to see if the engine is really locked up. Jack up a wheel if necessary, but any reasonably strong guy should be able to at least rock the tractor. This will also cause the starter to release if that's bound up in the ring gear.

Have you looked at the simple things? It may not want to turn over because the battery is shot. It may not want to turn over because the battery cables are corroded. A simple "click" from the starter doesn't mean the engine is "sod up."

Have you got a hand crank for it? Just to see if the engine is free... Leave the ignition off.

Well I would do a couple things. I would first off fill the cylinders with tranny fluid and then as the others have said pull the starter to make sure thats not whats up with it. I would also loosen up the drain plug on the engine just to check that you don;t have any water in the oil. You should never let an engine sit for more then a month with out at least turning it over. For me thats almost a full time job but all on mine get turned over at least once a month or more. Check the web site to understand

Check the starter, on my H the starter teeth jam on the flywheel occasionally. It acts as if it is locked up. Unbolt the starter so it is loose from the flywheel then re-tighten.

Bet you got a stuck starter. Very common the 300 tractors. Need to lossen the bolts and give it a wiggle. See what other folks say first. On my dad's farm his 300 is "missing" one bolt so it will not lock up. Does anyone know why they do this? jeffcat

That's a real good way to break a hole in the bell housing... Why don't you FIX the problem?

The reason the starter locks up is because it's WORN OUT. More specifically, the "Bendix end" on the starter is worn out. Pull the starter and have a look. The gear teeth will be all worn and chewed up. Look inside the starter mount hole at the ring gear. Make sure it's not all worn and chewed up too. If it is, it will need to be replaced as well.
