How much better, if any, are the Super M brakes over the M brakes. Do modern aftermarket linings increase the old M band style brakes performance?

Thanks,

Mark

I agree with Charlie M the disc brakes may be slightly better if they are working right but M brakes are good enough and require almost no maintenance except brake band replacemrnt and I doubt that many Ms will get used enough hours now to ever wear out a good set of bands.

Bought a 1947 H in 1981. In going over the tractor I put on new IH bands. The tractor was lightly used for 22 years. I adjusted the brakes maybe 3 times. They would drag the wheels anytime (1 set of weights and fluid). Only thing, they squealed some. On the Supers and up with the dry discs, glaze and dirt were the main enemies....QR..

Personally I would take the band brakes any day over the disk brakes on the old Farmalls. They work just as good and have a lot less maintenance. I'm sure a number of guys will disagree but I have tractors with both and the disk breaks leave a lot to be desired in my opinion.

That has always been my experience too. My Dad has a 450, SMTA and has also had a 560. I also have a 560 of my own. The brakes worked differently on each of them and varied from day to day or depending on which way the wind is blowing. It also seems impossible to get them adjusted for equal pedal travel for the right and left sides.

I don't have any experience with the older M style band brakes but they sound like they are much more consistant and probably better overall?

Thanks,

Mark
