My A starter just kinda growls when trying to start. This happened after having the charger on for a while the other day. When I tried to start it, the negative side ground cable got very hot & now I'm left with the growling starter.

Question is, could this be a battery prob?... I have nursed this battery along for 2 years now! Or, should I spend money on a new solenoid first?...Or, is it the starter?

Where should I start... the starter has never showed a hint of a problem before...

Thanks for the help..... . the grass is really starting to take off & I need to get this thing goin!

I just had the starter rebuilt on my super m. It would just barely turn the motor and you had better catch it on the first turn or you were done. The rebuilder showed me the back plate. The babbit bushing had worn out and the rotor shaft had worn a slot in the housing down about a quarter of an inch. THe top brushes were not even touching anymore.. Put the new rebuilt starter in and I thought air flow from the radiator fan alone was going to pull the tractor out of the shop.. Man whata differance... I'd say get the starter rebuilt. Good luck Tallperson

On my superA i had the same trouble. fixed the cables, new batt. same problem. turns out it was a poor ground on one of the brushes. The brush then grounded through the spring ,the spring got hot and turned from a spring into a bent piece of wire. Sanded the area where the ground strap hookde on and put a new spring in. Voila!!

I don't recall letter series Farmalls having a solenoid, unless it has some sort of retrofit starter. Like Old said, I'd start with the cables and make sure ALL connections are clean, bright and tight.

You sort of answereds your own question. You said the battery cable gets very hot. Well most of the time a cable getting hot is one of 2 things. ! and bad cable. 2 a starter that is going bad. Either way now that you have smoked a battery cable you need to replace it. Don't buy an auto type cable becuase they just don't dut it. You need and 0 or 00 cable and then go from there
