330u Pto won't stop running

My 330u has the rear independant PTO on it and I would like to use the tractor for some rotary mowing this spring but cannot get the PTO to stop spinning. I have tried to adjust the unit with the two screws and lock nuts but when I get it adjusted, it only stays that way for an hour or two then runs non stop with the lever pushed down. If I adjust the PTO screws tightly, then the tractor engine is put under load and wants to stop running. What is the problem?

There is (supposed to be) a mark on the lever inbetween latched on, and latched off that is used to set the adjustments. The book shows this well.
If this unit is by the book and still going haywire, It may have deteriorating bands, or one of the levers, or links has lost motion (looseness when pushed or pulled). They are remarkably sturdy if adjusted correctly and linkage is solid. Good luck,
JimN

I had adjusted it to the manuals procedure but I might have to adjust the linkage from the lever back by the PTO. The thing is when I did adjust it, only one screw (the one more to the rear of tractor) really helped and actually grabbed. The other (the one closer to the front of tractor) I could turn a bunch of times and nothing happens.

One is the brake, one is the engage band, they both need to operate correctly. Relining them can be done at some brake shps, and at crane repair facilities.

Sorry, I do not remember. If it drives shaft driven tools when engaged, and does not stop when locked into the off notch, the band that is loose when the lever is engaged is the brake band, and the other is the drive band.
Good luck,
JimN
